Could they pull off a Titan series?

I love the Titan novels that are out but was wondering if it would be possible to make this into a series? The reason I ask is the crew, they are mostly alien and a lot of the characters (like chakka and Torvig) would have to be CGI.

DO you think this would be feasible or if they did go along with the story line that characters like this would just be written out?

I disagree look how succsessful the JJ movie was and while it was watered down Trek, it went back to old Trek.

JJ Trek proves my point - Titan is written and conceived more in the style of the Berman era, which television viewing audiences have clearly shown they're sick of. Voyager and Enterprise's ratings are pretty indicative of that. JJ Trek's success shows that people are ready for something different and the style of JJ Trek, much as this may annoy people, is pretty different from any previous Treks regardless of things having the same name.

If Nemesis and Enterprise had been better and retained some interest in oldTrek, and if it was still 2003, then yeah maybe a Titan spin-off could have been workable.

As it is, it would be a forgotten subplot of a forgotten movie starring a washed up actor playing a character that no one remembers. Not a recipe for success.

I don't think a Titan series could work simply because the opportunity for such a series has passed by now. I think the 24th-Century will continue forward with books, comics, and games, but I very much doubt we'll ever see another TV series or movie set in that timeframe again. Nemesis was the final onscreen chapter of that era, for good or for ill, IMO...we had kind of moved on from that with ENT, really...

I love how you say it like it was fact. We don't even really know why Enterprise failed, and we can't clearly say why Star Trek 2009 was a success.
And clearly you wouldn't see one of the novels realized as a TV episode, simply because those stories were not created for this medium.

Trek XI was one of the top grossing movies of last year. Why would any studio businessman in his right mind want to fire up a show using the old style Trek formula?

As for what "something major" would be, it's not too difficult to use your imagination is it? DS9 was something majorly different (and had no boldly going aspect to it) and is well regarded.

They were bombs, true. But that the "old formula" (whatever this means) doesn't work is just a theory of yours. It could very well be that simply the marketing sucked. Or the script. Or the cast. Or that it was the right movie at the wrong time. Nobody can say for sure.

What I mean by the "old formula" is simply how most Trek episodes felt in the 80s-90s era - it was very formulaic right down to them having Ferengi episodes in both Enterprise and Voyager when there never should have been and having multiple "holodeck" episodes on Enterprise, again, where there should have been none. It was also the fact that Trek was so neck deep in it's own mythology that newcomers weren't coming because they were put off by it. It was a death of creativity and imagination that came upon the series through Voyager and Enterprise that needs to be livened up. Maybe that major change is to make Trek a blockbuster shoot 'em up. Whatever the case may be, I don't think a Titan show would find an audience - especially in the wake of Trek XI.

I felt similar about ENT. They promised a show that was different from the others, and what did we get? A Klingon in the first 5 minutes, and Archer getting beamed out somewhere in the climax. Then Borg, Ferengi, etc...

But I don't see how that would have put off new people who didn't know Trek before. There is no perceived death of creativity when you don't know what came before.

I'd rather blame the execution, not the concept, or formula. The actors, the editing, stories, the way it was promoted, that sort of stuff.

Star Trek 2009 is pretty much the same as Insurrection, Nemesis, Generations, TWOK. Some bad guy has a doomsday device, Kirk & Co do something about it and in the end there's a space battle and the bad guy dies. But apparently the fast paced style of the movie, effects, actors and - in my opinion - big names and the agressive marketing campaign made it a success.

Boldly going where? While there were a few interesting races in the extreme background of some shots, all but one of the heroes were once again Humans, all but one of the heroes were men, all but two of the heroes were white. They visited no new planet, "seeked" out no new civilizations.

The last two movies had similar plots. Romulan (culturally) madman, ugly henchmen, predictability large badguy ship, obssessed with member of Enterprise's crew, in the end big badguy and his ship go bye bye.

A Titan series could be made to work, even the book series creators would agree there would have to be serious changes. I don't think that a major CGI character would work just yet, maybe as a background crewman. The members of the Titan crew who are unusally shaped might be "redesigned" so that a live actor can depict them with only practical make-up effects. The role of Captain Troi (Riker) and councular Troi would likely have to be recast with younger actors. Entirely new character could also be created.

Like many Star Trek fans, I'm unwilling to accept that I'm only going to get two hours of Star Trek every third year.

I vote yes on Star Trek: Titan (the series).

First: Riker and Troi are way too old/fat/past it to lead a TV series.

I don't think Titan could be done convincingly at a TV budget. I think the result would resemble Sanctuary - very obvious and unconvincing CG backgrounds and characters, and CBS would never allow one of their top properties to appear cheap and nasty when stuff like SGU has far fewer but much more convincing CG aliens.
I don't think the Farscape muppets would work in Trek, either.

The only way Titan could work is as a cartoon series. There were some neat "Titan animated" character pics posted in the art forum a while ago.

This is one of the most absurd thing I've heard on this board. They would still be in their forties in the trekverse, younger than Picard was when TNG started. They are far from too fat especially Troi/Sirtis from looks of her in TATV.
