Could mini-series work in the short-term?

I think Paramount would be hesitant to do a new series after Enterprise flopped, but could mini-series work in the meantime? Featuring all past series? Even TOS (both the surviving 60s cast, or the new 2009 cast)?

It would ensure high ratings, which in the end is what matters, and would warm Paramount to stump up the money for a new series.

The miniseries format is dead on network TV and mostly dead on cable. I guess it just doesn't work financially (doesn't give you time to amortize the startup costs) because there's no reason it can't work creatively.

Combine that with the deadness of the space opera format on network and cable TV, and this idea is a non-starter.

A mini-series might have worked the year after Enterprise. There was hype around the 40th Anniversary and all the sets were still around. But that ship has sailed. As Temis mentioned, a mini-series would never generate enough ratings to justify rebuilding the sets and paying the salaries for the big name actors you'd need. Also, there are not enough fans interested in the Prime universe to justify any new Prime universe production.

And finally, PARAMOUNT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH TV TREK. Any TV production will come from CBS not Paramount.

And before someone else asks, no, CBS has no reason to be interested in a) space opera or b) miniseries. They go for the proven ratings winners: cop shows and sitcoms.

And to add to that: Even if CBS were interested in making miniseries, they'd never do it for Star Trek simply because of the budget necessary for sets and special effects. All that money spent for just three television episodes? Not gonna happen.

If they hadn't destroyed the sets for Enterprise, I think a miniseries on that would be perfect. Perhaps one focusing on the Romulan war?

Maybe a miniseries on Titan would work as well. Not sure how well it would run with Frakes in command though.....

A DS9 miniseries featuring Sisko returning for some reason would be cool as well.
