Could having Seven and keeping Kes have worked?

I always wonder if it could have worked to have both Seven and Kes on the show, and loosing Harry instead. How would that have influenced the shows dynamic and storytelling?

Oh, i see ... I'm sure a number of fanfic writers would have explored janeway / seven / kes scenarios

um, i wouldn't mind some links to those

You naughty guy! ;-)
I guess for example Naomi would have gravitated more towards Kes then to "The Borg Lady".

I'm not sure about that. She was attracted to the Borg lady because the Borg lady was different to all the others, and frightening. Kes was just a cute little Neelix sidekick. I reckon Naomi and Seven would have been mates one way or another.

If Kes stayed, Neelix and Sam wouldn't have hooked up and then Ensign Wildman would have had to have booked her daycare elsewhere...

If Kes stayed, she would have moved on to Tom eventually, but would that be before, during or after his relationship with B'Elanna.

When Kes had children, he or she would have grown quickly and seduced Icheb or Naomi.

Stuff would have happened.

That was the original plan until Wang appeared on People Magazine's 50 most beautiful people list.

There would have been a new "TOS-style" big three consisting of Janeway, Seven, and Kes, IMO.

Wouldn't Kes be dead by season 7 anyway?

She had her second birthday party in an early season two episode called twisted, so Kes would turn 9 in early season 7 and dies ten feet from earth in the final episode before her tenth birthday.

Which hardly has any impact since she went to Earth already in Futures End.

They missed a chance with Kes' character. She should have died after a very short lifespan, as indicated at the beginning of the show.

The plan originally was to have her gradually "age" every half season using various makeup and prosthetics. That would have been a bold and interesting move (which is probably why it never happened)

Ageing wouldn't have been a problem as they could just have pulled that Cold Fire-we-are-older-than-nine-Ocampans trick. Seven was such an uber-character she stole practically everyone's thunder: B'Elanna's engineering skills, Harry's astrometrics/nav, Tuvok's logic/tactical, and usurped Chuckles as Janeway's go-to confidante. Only the Doc and Neelix's cooking were safe. So actually Kes might have retained her uniqueness with a bit stronger writing and development - though two babes in catsuits might have been a bit much for the fanboys and fangirls :p

Ive always thought that the majority of Janeways scenes with Seven where she basically holds her hand and advises her on becoming an individual could have just as easily have taken place between Kes and Seven.

After all Seven spends a lot of time hanging out with the Doctor. Kes also spends majority of her time hanging out with the Doctor. The crew of Voyager didnt like or trust Seven when she first came aboard largely because of her past as a Borg drone but Kes wouldnt have minded she would have just been excited to meet someone new and her previous experience with the Doctor meant Kes would have been in a great position to help Seven discover her individuality and grow as a person.

After all Kes was the first to see the Doctor as a sentient being in his own right rather than just some kinda technological tool capable of talking back and during her time in the series she actively supported and helped the Doctor to grow and develop to become more than what he was programed to be.

So she could easily have filled a similar role with Seven. Though imho it should have been Neelix who left. By that point he wasnt really serving much purpose as they were travelling through space he wasnt familiar with Niomi didnt really have any need for him after Seven arrived and it would have made sense for Voyager to stumble accross the colony of Talaxians before they wandered so far from where the original Talaxian homeworld was...okay so they were already pretty far from where Talaxia once was but they were a lot closer than in the final season if that makes any sense.

It makes perfect sense.

What are some adventures that Seven Mary Sued which Kes might have Mary Sue blocked either with naive kindness or Ocampan super powers?

Go to fanfiction.net, the TV section (make sure you get the regular stories, not the crossovers), click on Star Trek Voyager, and have a look around. There are scads of J/7 stories.

Don't ask me about Kes stories, though - I've never deliberately searched for those, since I never liked the character from the get-go.

Would it have worked better? I tend to think yes, as having Kes remain on board may have balanced out the plethora of Seven-centric stories we were fed during those last four seasons.

Kes was one of those characters whose potential was glimpsed in a few episodes but never fully realized, like a few others (although not nearly as bad as Kim and Chakotay).

Had they kept Kes, they could have done some interesting stories with aging and even life itself.

Maybe in another universe...

didnt the writers had trouble with kes, that was they got rid of her.

They had a problem with Wang, and they wanted a Borg, a boy to begin with but what they wanted evolved, who they could get rid of evolved too when Wang became unkillable, so the shitcan passed to Lien.
