Could gangsta rap survive in the Federation?

Lt. Cheka Wey

Commander
Almost none of the social issues, problems, attitudes adressesd/gloryfied by gangsta rap seem to exist in the 24. century. Would most people in the englightened federation know what i am talking about when talking abou rap or hip hop?

Aside from Tom Paris and a few throwaway references, they don't seem to know much about Elvis or The Beatles, and Riker can't even tell the difference between Bizet and Berlioz.

So probably not.

Not all rap is gangsta rap. That's a very limited understanding. Gangsta rap is just what is used by record companies to sell to kids, but a great deal isn't like that.

Like rock, rap and hip hop covers a wide range of issues, not just social problems. Some deal with timeless subjects such as love, relationships, having a good time, or just the need to dance or groove. Don't see that going away by the 24th-Century.

One example that immediately comes to mind is Common's "Come Close."

Klingon Opera survives in the Federation*; yet, I'm sure most of the Federation citizens aren't big into war, conquest and Klingon honor. So, maybe there is a place for gangsta rap.

*In the holodeck "family" Voyager's Doctor created, the son was depicted as listening to Klingon Opera (after being tweaked by B'elanna).

I'm sure "gangsta rap" is studied by Federation historians who concentrate in 20th and 21st century cultural development, to assist in the understanding of similar musical forms in alien societies.

Sure it could. Rich white critics think Public Enemy is like the greatest band of all time because they are personally distanced from the political issues they rapped about and it makes them feel good about themselves. In the Federation, rich critics are even *more* distanced from the impact of class issues, they'd lap up the gangsta rap that comes from the outer colonies. The most critically praised album of the 24th century is "Cap Them Spoonhead Bitches" by Bajoran rapper Y'Rophet.

I think Klingons would really dig Manowar, Iced Earth, and Gwar, actually!

Did Paris ever make a Beatles reference? I was about to offer that in 500 hours of Trek, those stuffed shirts never even managed to drop a Beatles reference. Firefly, to its credit, managed to drop a Beatles reference in its pilot episode!

The reason why we don't hear a lot of modern music is probably because of copyright laws and licensing...
Wouldn't prevent them from dropping a cultural reference.

The only Beatles reference in all Star Trek is on the dedication plaque for USS Sutherland.

^So, unseen and unspoken...a set design joke, like the medical readout "Health Insurance Remaining".

It's almost funny that the most "modern" music used in Star Trek is a white rap group from the latter quarter of the last century.

At the same time though, I'm happy that we never heard any popular (at the time) music used in Star Trek. Could you imagine TNG today had they found a way to have 80's music in it? They probably would not have chosen wisely.

Though, it is too bad they couldn't have found a way to at least reference more modern classic music within the franchise. Ex: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, ELO, etc...

Probably not. We know that T.V and baseball didn't survive. Guess in the future everyone plays in holosuites, ;)
