Could a Star Trek movie work with new characters & ship?

Basically, would people want to see a Star Trek movie that doesn't feature a ship called Enterprise or any familiar characters? Would it be successful?

Er, didn’t they do that with Discovery? I mean, it’s not a movie but it’s the same concept.

I think if they had a great story and a great cast, no one would care what the name of the ship is or that it’s not about Kirk or Spock.

I think it would have to be a star vehicle. Like they did with the Mission: Impossible movies. They pushed it as a Tom Cruise movie.

If they did something like push it as a Will Smith movie first (just as an example) and a Star Trek movie second, then you could do it. It would all come down to who you cast in the lead roles.

Before everything became remakes and sequels, most movies had all-new characters and premises. I don't see any reason why it can't work if done right. Star Trek fans ould go see it anyway, and new viewers aren't going to be overly bothered that it's not about Kirk or Picard.

This sounds most likely. The Star Trek name alone wasn't enough with established characters in 2016.

Reminds me of the 2007 rumours of Tom Cruise as Kirk:lol:

Sure. I think you'd need a big star and a lot of marketing. But that's basically true for any potential movie. People might even prefer something totally new. But as someone else mentioned, a studio would see it as a big risk, which means it is unlikely to happen in the current climate, even if it's a good idea. They would see it as something like doing a Marvel movie featuring a brand new character, not from any comic books. (For all I know, they've done this. I don't follow Marvel movies, much. lol). I just think they would have established characters featured, even if it was a sort of passing of the torch thing.

A Starfleet thriller set on some remote colony, a Klingon action movie set on a negh'var cruiser, a heartwarming adventure about a little boy who gets lost in the insanity of Yorktown station and needs to find his way back home... the Trek multiverse is a wild playground ;)

I'd watch it. I imagine it would be as successful as a TV show with a new set of characters. However, I'm not 100% sure, so if I were a movie executive, I wouldn't bet millions of dollars on it.

As a major motion picture released in theaters? No. You can barely get people to see a Star Trek movie with the legacy characters [like Star Trek: Beyond], not sure how many people would go and see a Star Trek movie in theaters without any legacy characters. Even with a "star" in the film it would be a tough sell. It might... MIGHT work as more of a lower, modest budget movie (like Star Trek: TWOK through NEM), but nobody is making those right now. It's either big budget or small little indie films.

Now, if we're talking about a direct-to-streaming movie on CBS All Access or Pluto TV or wherever ViacomCBS will focus their digital offerings going forward, then, "Yep!" I think it would work fantastically. I think Star Trek is PERFECT for direct-to-streaming movies.

DISCO is definitely a foundation and I strongly believe Viacom should go from there. Launch a show for a few years; it becomes popular and throw the series into a motion picture franchise. Best to salvage these performers while they still are young and good looking and bring out their A game for a general audience and a larger canvas!!!

This is actually a great idea. Perhaps a deal could be done with Netflix or something.

Why would they put it on Netflix when they already own not one, but two streaming services? They would be much more likely to use it as an enticement for the rumored enhanced CBS All Access, now with Viacom(tm).

Any direct to streaming movies (and supposedly there is a Discovery one planned for after season 3), will essentially be Long Treks, and go to CBS-AA in the US and Netflix or Amazon Prime elsewhere.
