Corbomite Maneuver: So primative, yet so cool!

SO primative: Spock's short bangs, Sulu's collar, Uhura's gold (green) dress. . . .

Crazy camera work: overheads, handheld as Kirk gets out of the turbolift (showing the two stations past Spock you rarely see -- and there are crew there!)

Conversation in Kirk's quarters. That sort of quiet time really evaporated as the series tightened up.

And . . . are those trombone mutes -- the two white things --in McCoys cabinet in the background? (GSchnitzer, are you out there? You are my props/details hero; you'll know.)

This was essentially Star Trek's third pilot. One of the reasons I recommend this one above all others for anyone looking for an introduction to TOS.
 
So many fun rough edges. Spock shouts some command. Later starts to say "I'm sorry," about something, but can't or won't.

OTOH The pacing is a BIT slow.
 
To this day I still think this is the BEST Star Trek episode made (of any of the series); because it really just (imo) encapulates the essence of 'Star Trek' as well as the characters, and their interactions. We have a ship exploring OAST the known area of space for new worlds/civilizations; they encounter something new/unusual, work to figure it out, try to make peaceful first contact, but are thrown into a (as far as they know) VERY dangerous situation, that they can't solve with their high technology; so they have to use their intelligence and wits to get out of it - yet in ther end, they find it's a test, and that the other civilization IS interested in peaceful first contact/exchange (thus Bailey remains with the Fesarius); and it was all a test to be certain of the Humans true intentions (of honestly wanting peaceful first contact).

Again, excellent episode. I also have always loved the fact that Kirk comes up with the whole 'Combomite' gambit BECAUSE he was having a heated argument with McCoy in a stressful situation.

Just plain good.

A trombone plunger mute is where Charlie Brown's teacher got the "mwah-mwah . . ." voice. So why not Arex carrying on the tradition in the 23rd C?
 
Tranya always looked to me like orange juice. I guess Tang will count. Do we know if it was actually Tang? Did Kirk drink first? Everyone knows how Kirk was always chasing after some Tang. (couldn't resist)

Actually, it was grapefruit juice....which Clint Howard hated. Ironic, since his character Balok obsesses over Tranya...and we get the sense that the taste is 'out of this world'...;)

Clint Howard is WAY creepier than puppet Blalok. Especially when he laughs. My kids and I always play the game of guessing if Herb Solow's title card at the end will be Blalok or "the green girl."

Fun times in Nerdsville.
 
It's the first episode filmed and the chemistry and writing makes you feel like these people have known each other for years. The characters are so alive and its the first episode out the gate! Thus the greatness that is TOS.
