Corbomite Maneuver: So primative, yet so cool!

See, they trick you by letting you think that the other ship is gonna stop when it hits the edges of the screen, which will still dwarf Our Favorite Starship.

It's the difference between of being out of focus and in focus.

Out of focus may leave something to the imagination, but in focus looks beautiful.

^ Oh, I dunno. I think the slightly out of focus look gives it a much more realistic feel. As I recall, the Fesarius was supposed to still be about a mile or so away. In the real world, I don't see objects that far away in razor sharp clarity, no matter how big they are.

That is a GREAT sequence. It looks beautiful in the new f.x.! I usually don't like them. Do they still keep the general flow of the sequence where the Fesarius keeps on overfilling the screen? Or is it done diffrently?

plynch, I was going to suggest you might try Trek Core, but the screen cap gallery there is offline at the moment; you might want to try back later.

Well, it looks like they made the Enterprise bigger and moved it more toward the center of the screen, and they show both the Enterprise and the Fesarius in super-sharp focus which makes it look like they're very close together. I thought the original shot was beautifully composed and evocative, giving a real, almost subliminal, feeling of size and space. I just don't get that feeling from the new version.

Actually, I think it may be because they did give the Faserius size/diameter in the actual episiode dialog (one mile). Thus now that they nhave 3D modeling tech; the PCs generating the image know the exact scale ofboth models; so they move the models together to the range stated in the episode, and boom you have a 'to scale' rendering of the two ships that we get in the Remastered version.

This.

I watched Who Mourns for Adonais yesterday, and the new shots of the E being held by the hand with the planet in the background were composed horribly.

Agreed. Not only does the hand look silly, but the Enterprise, hand and planet are fixed in relation to each other and the sun angle, yet the background stars are sliding from left to right.

I haven't watched TOS in years(hangs head in shame) and recently got a great deal on the remastered S1. My 4 yr old keeps bugging me to watch Star Trek(I think he was fascinated with the case) with him so the other night I let him stay up late and I chose this episode. Brilliant. I forgot just how good it was, and now he wants to work his way through the rest. We have a new fan, folks!

Everyone's pretty much covered it, so I'll just say that this has been my favorite episode for a long, long time. In the whole show, the only shots fired are at the buoy, and it's just as intense as the most action-packed of the movies. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

You can always go the direct access route. Just change the number references. Single digit episodes are preceded by a zero.

SO primative: Spock's short bangs, Sulu's collar, Uhura's gold (green) dress. . . .

Crazy camera work: overheads, handheld as Kirk gets out of the turbolift (showing the two stations past Spock you rarely see -- and there are crew there!)

Conversation in Kirk's quarters. That sort of quiet time really evaporated as the series tightened up.

I think TCM is one of the best TOS episodes ever made. The camera work was excellent. Visceral. Very rarely do you get the camera trailing directly behind Kirk as he walks on the bridge, with a little camera shake going on. Plus the subtleties in dialog between the characters. The only real let down is the ridiculous Balok control cabin at the end and of course the rather obvious alien personification by a child (Clint Howard). Curtains and flat walls galore. Looks very collegiate. But... I guess the budget could only go so far.

The remastering job is really well done and cleans up a lot of the bush-league characteristics in the effects, especially where the cube probe and Fesarius are concerned.

Actually, the "replacement" isn't Mr. Bailey. Anybody know where he came from? :)
