Cop Out, a Pre-Release Review.

I'm disappointed as well and I've loved each and every movie Kevin Smith has ever made. Seann William Scott is the sole saving grace for this very unfunny "comedy". I'm still looking forward to Hit Somebody a movie that Smith clearly gives a fuck about.

It's worth noting the critical thing in this movie is that while it was directed by Smith it was not written by Smith.

At the bottom of the page there is a collage of black/white buddy cop movie posters. Rush Hour is among them.

Quite true. :)

I will note that his ability as a visual storyteller has vastly improved. Constrast the action in Cop Out with the action in Mallrats and Dogma. The action was staged so stiffly in those flicks. The action in Cop Out was smooth and energetic. Sure nobody is ever going to mistake the action in Cop Out for anything directed by Cameron, Besson or Rodriguez but nobody would mistake it for an action scene directed by Kevin Smith either. ;)

Also Dave Klein's work in Cop Out was beautiful to look at though...

I think he should have gone for more of a gritty and grainy look considering it was supposed to hark back to 80s actioners. Still nobody would look at Clerks and then look at Cop Out and think that it had any of the same people behind the lens.

I'm really looking forward to Hit Somebody. It will have a proper Kevin Smith screenplay and it'll look fan-fucking-tastic!

A Pre-Release by several years.

I'm assuming you haven't seen the movie yet, right? Because quite literally none of the awkward culture shock clichés typical of black/white buddy cop movies mentioned in the Maddux article are present in 'Cop-Out.'

Willis and Morgan have been partners for nine years and work well together while occasionally getting on each other's nerves like any partners would. But there's no arguing over rap or country music, both are typical middle class family men, and Morgan even gets called "Wikipedia" at one point because he's a fountain of obscure knowledge, with intelligence which he uses on more than one occasion to track down the bad guys using instead of relying on "street smarts" alone.

So I'll give the movie credit for at least avoiding the racial clichés that make those other films so cringeworthy. That being said, it was not a great movie. It was fairly humorous with okay action and plotting. I'd give it a "B."

They called him "Wikipedia" but "Uncyclopedia" would have been a better name for him because he was a complete and utter fucktard.
