Exactly. It was fun when it was fun. It hasn't been fun in decades, just obsessive.
I used to do that too, siskokid888. Then I went online, (ST.Com) and began being assaulted for actually just having fun and enjoying Star Trek. Much, but not all, of my playfulness towards Trek was beaten out of me.
By fans that have spent a supremely inordinate amount of time obsessing on trivialized technobabble nit-pick details and hold it as an accomplishment equal to Nobel-prize notoriety - only with more self-indulgent imagined prestige.Exactly. It was fun when it was fun. It hasn't been fun in decades, just obsessive.

Yea, I've experienced that too, but you just gotta ignore it. Those that engage in that self righteous nonsense over a fantasy universe that is supposed to be entertaining and fun are not worth your time. I have found them to be few and far between (and usually in need of a date). In the "Goodbye to the ST Experience" thread I talk about sitting at Quark's and talking to other fans. One of the games we used to play was trying to rationalize inconsistancies in the Trekverse, and it was a hell of alot of fun. Of course, as more alcohol was imbibed, the solutions got siller, but a good time was had by all, and any hard ass continuity nazis were quickly shown the door. It's not real, people, its supposed to be fun, and if JJ Abrams can make a killer Trek movie, so what if it has inconsistancies. We will enjoy the movie, then get together later at our favorite watering hole and explain them away.
Aww sorry to hear about that Uss Stardis. I definitely think it's fun to try and make everything fit together and come up for explanations for the inconsistencies, but some people seem to take EVERYTHING so darn seriously.

Guys, guys, guys... enough of the imagery! I have this picture in my head now of the Canon Police sitting in the movie theater with a laptop muttering, "No no no... that's all wrong", instead of enjoying the movie.Exactly. It was fun when it was fun. It hasn't been fun in decades, just obsessive.

Exactly. Fun and entertainment ruled the days. Picking at inconsistencies was for the fun of reconciling them somehow, there was no cause for being angry and/or brooding about them.

Thanks You.I've been steadily healing ever since I discovered fan sites other than ST.Com.
I want Trek to be fun again, that is what it's all about. I guarantee something(s) about it won't be right but let's leave the notebooks and fact checkers at home, let's go to the film with an open mind towards just being entertained and we might be.
After the hype and fun dies down we can then begin gleefully picking it apart together while we wait for the next one.
As I have said from day one, the continuity of Star Trek is the last thing these producers of TREK should worry about. Don't get me wrong, I love the history of Trek, but even some of us disagree about what has or hasn't happened in the continuity of TREK.
And to expect any new fans that may 'come' from this new movie to learn it as if the continuity is like some crazy ass TREK BIBLE would be silly. If this movie attracts new fans and has to jettison some long time fan with a continuity stick up their ass then I am all for it...
I have been with Star Trek from the begining, and I am willing to loosen the leash of the past that seems to choke every new star trek production that comes down the pike..

They'll be blogging and posting about it during the movie and showing other theater goers screencaps to prove their point.I have this picture in my head now of the Canon Police sitting in the movie theater with a laptop muttering, "No no no... that's all wrong", instead of enjoying the movie.
Allow me to say that I'd be quite pleased if ST XI ignored all continuity beyond the original series' 79 episodes--I'd even be willing to sacrifice my beloved TMP and TWoK. The inclusion of Old Spock will surely put the kibosh on that, though, which is why I wish there were no original cast members involved at all.
Really, instead of yet another time travel story, this one with fan wank all over it, I wish this movie had been treated more as episode one of season 4.
the movie could have been a grandiose adventure taking place on whatever star date followed "Turnabout intruder".

JJ's movie won't be "grandiose" enough for you?
TAS was Season Four for many of us, and DC Fontana is writing Season Four stuff for IDW's comics at the moment - and featuring Arex and Chekov.

I'm sure it will. I just ment "grandiose" as in comparison to a TOS episode. I would hope the effects would be a LITTLE more advanced by now. And it didn't have to exactly be season 4, maybe even the final voyage of the mission and the return to earth? I just thought it was an interesting suggestion. Of course, if the movie rocks, I won't care if it takes place in 1972. As long as they don't go polyester, of course.

The "final mission" of the five-year mission would have to be an interesting story to tell. I can't believe it ended with a whimper.

I hadn't given it much thought, but that is a cool idea - the movie could have been a grandiose adventure taking place on whatever star date followed "Turnabout intruder". And if the movie is profitable, sequels could document other remaining adventures of the 5 year mission. Good one, Brutal. Hopefully the current idea will pan out, but I like yours.
