Yea, I've experienced that too, but you just gotta ignore it. Those that engage in that self righteous nonsense over a fantasy universe that is supposed to be entertaining and fun are not worth your time. I have found them to be few and far between (and usually in need of a date). In the "Goodbye to the ST Experience" thread I talk about sitting at Quark's and talking to other fans. One of the games we used to play was trying to rationalize inconsistancies in the Trekverse, and it was a hell of alot of fun. Of course, as more alcohol was imbibed, the solutions got siller, but a good time was had by all, and any hard ass continuity nazis were quickly shown the door. It's not real, people, its supposed to be fun, and if JJ Abrams can make a killer Trek movie, so what if it has inconsistancies. We will enjoy the movie, then get together later at our favorite watering hole and explain them away.

Allow me to say that I'd be quite pleased if ST XI ignored all continuity beyond the original series' 79 episodes--I'd even be willing to sacrifice my beloved TMP and TWoK. The inclusion of Old Spock will surely put the kibosh on that, though, which is why I wish there were no original cast members involved at all.

Really, instead of yet another time travel story, this one with fan wank all over it, I wish this movie had been treated more as episode one of season 4.

Exactly. Fun and entertainment ruled the days. Picking at inconsistencies was for the fun of reconciling them somehow, there was no cause for being angry and/or brooding about them.

As I have said from day one, the continuity of Star Trek is the last thing these producers of TREK should worry about. Don't get me wrong, I love the history of Trek, but even some of us disagree about what has or hasn't happened in the continuity of TREK.

And to expect any new fans that may 'come' from this new movie to learn it as if the continuity is like some crazy ass TREK BIBLE would be silly. If this movie attracts new fans and has to jettison some long time fan with a continuity stick up their ass then I am all for it...

I have been with Star Trek from the begining, and I am willing to loosen the leash of the past that seems to choke every new star trek production that comes down the pike..

I hadn't given it much thought, but that is a cool idea - the movie could have been a grandiose adventure taking place on whatever star date followed "Turnabout intruder". And if the movie is profitable, sequels could document other remaining adventures of the 5 year mission. Good one, Brutal. Hopefully the current idea will pan out, but I like yours.

I always say that if you're looking for a better send-off episode, try "The Counter-clock Incident" (TAS). Guest stars from previous STs were a feature of the pilots of TNG (McCoy), DS9 (Picard), VOY (Quark & Morn) and ENT (Cochrane), and Riker and Troi were in the finale of ENT, but TOS/TAS gets its send off by bringing "back" Robert and Sarah April.

The plot of TCCI has lots of holes in it but it's a lot of fun and a great conclusion... Until TMP comes along and starts it all up again.

Yes..I like your idea too. And I am totally with you. If this movie is good and blows up all the shows that came after TOS (TNG-DS9-VOY) then oh well...the so called 'continuity' was pissed on far before this movie so perhaps an enema is the way to go..
