Constantine - Season 1

+ a long hard look at network interference upon launch

And to that point I would include moving the time slot. 8 PM on Friday is a pain in the ass. A lot of families are watching cable news at that point. Moving a show into that block makes it look as if you're setting it up to fail.

Cancelled :(

So unless someone else picks it up, that's all folks. Shame, it really hit its stride after the mid-season break, and I would have liked to see what they could do with a second season.

^not surprised but very disappointed. It was getting quite good in the last half of that season. I wanted to see more. :(

Yea, it was really starting to hit it's stride towards the end. Very disappointed to hear this. Maybe Syfy will pick this up a replacement supernatural fantasy show to replace Lost Girl. I guess Bitten could also fill that role, but I would rather see this.

I wonder if Netflix would pick Netflix would pick up a DC show after the already initiated a relationship with Marvel. Maybe Amazon Prime could pick it up as a comic show to compete with Marvel. Maybe they could even use it as launching pad for more DC supernatural shows like Dr. Fate, The Specter, and Zatanna.

I'm talking from a postition of pure ignorance, but it seems like this is the type of show that would go to some cable channel (SyFy, USA, TNT, whatever) instead of Netflix or Amazon.

Well, the comic it's based on is from DC's mature-readers Vertigo line. As a Netflix series -- heck, even as a Syfy series, to a lesser extent -- it would be much freer from censorship than on NBC and could be truer to the source material.

Stephen Amell is really awesome. He just tweeted that if anyone picks up the show he will guest star. I not sure how much sway he has with TPTB to allow that but nice he is willing to support it.

I read Fox was possible. With Gotham already there but also DC's Vertigo Pilot Lucifer likely to be on their fall schedule. That could directly tie to Constantine.

It's disappointing that Constantine is cancelled. Comic book adapted TV properties were on quite the roll there. With everyone that was out or debuted since last Fall renewed. When Agent Carter surprised us yesterday this was the only hold out and I was more concerned for this.

As others said it got so much better in the back half. Once the suits got out of the way the show runner was able to start doing what he'd wanted since the start. I had read and I think discussed how the NBC suits wanted a few different things after they saw the pilot and that restructuring caused some early audience indifference most likely and they didn't return.

I'd like to put some real stock in the the SyFy & Fox rumors for pick up but I just don't see it happening. Not with so many other comic shows already out there. Another network may just see this as the bar for # of comic based shows on air at any one time. Especially with two more debuting next year in Lucifer & Supergirl.

Constantine didn't feel like a comic book show though, it felt like another generic urban fantasy show. I liked it, but it didn't stand out for me.

Here's the thing -- we're conditioned to equate "comic book" with "superhero," but comics are a medium, not a genre. There have been horror comics for as long as there have been superhero comics, or probably longer. In fact, Constantine is one of two horror-detective shows based on Vertigo comics this season, the other being iZombie. Not to mention that the popular horror series The Walking Dead is based on a comic book, as was Tales from the Crypt in the '90s.

I am really sorry this show didn't get a chance to find its footing.

It really did mess up though with the first episodes. Hellblazer was as much about tone as it was about plot. The series did the same thing with Constantine as the New 52 did. It believed that JC and his attitude was ALL that really made the subject matter different. It's not. In many ways the tone of True Detective was closer to Hellblazer than this series was.

Hellblazer, of which Constantine is the main character, was really about evoking the dread of the unknown and fighting against fate no matter how futile it might be. It was almost Lovecraftian in its themes and feel. It was also about Constantine using his wits to get by. He is a con artist and like all good con artist stories the pay off is in the constant surprise of just how he outwits his enemies. It also needs long arcs to really earn the payoff.

The character also needs to be an HBO, AMC, or Netflix production in order to really be able to push the envelope the way the original comic book did.

I agree with that wholeheartedly. A cable or service needs to pick this up and give it the free reign that it needs to really tell its story. However, it appears very unlikely that such a move will ever happen.

Ever is a long time. In the near future the concept is probably dead, but not forever.
