Constantine - Season 1

I got caught up last night and finally watched the season finale of Constantine.
I do indeed hope it's just that, a season finale.

^Well, the Syfy exec just says he hasn't been party to any discussions about it. That doesn't absolutely rule it out as a future possibility. After all, the original item said only that it had been bandied about as an idea. That could mean that it came up in NBC's discussions about their options for continuing the show, someone saying "Maybe we could do this," but it didn't get as far as anyone actually calling up Syfy and talking to them about it.

But if it's true that NBC believes in the show and wants to continue it somehow, that means there's still hope. Maybe NBC could renew it after all, or maybe they actually will talk to Syfy about it now, or maybe they'll move it to Netflix.

It'll be sad to see the show go after finally starting to get good, but given the weak-sauce beginning the show got off to I can't say I'll be surprised if it doesn't get a second season.

Regarding the last episode: did I miss something, or was Corrigan rather poorly introduced here? Did he show up in an earlier episode and I just forgot because it felt like he was just there as if we were already supposed to know who he is. I didn't even catch his name until right near the end and I made the Spectre connection.

I was quite taken aback to see that Manny might be with the brujeria. So seemingly Papa Midnite knows that he's with the brujeria.

But I've a question - let's say you are an evil angel type. Why in the whole world would you encourage Constantine to continue to fight the good fight? Why not abandon him to the asylum that he self-checked himself into? Or did Manny pull a fast one on Papa Midnite and is lying to him so that he abstains from trying to cash in on the bounty on Constantine's head. Also, does Manny have designs on Zed? He appeared to her...

^the real question is why put a bounty out on Constantine in the first place? It seems Manny has some kind of long term plan going and the brujeria & Constantine are just pawns.

Or rather, they're with him. He's the mastermind behind the whole thing.

Maybe because Constantine's the one person who might be able to stop Manny's plans, so if Manny can keep him under control and focused where Manny wants, he can negate that advantage. Maybe he directs John toward incidental crises to distract him from the more important stuff Manny's doing elsewhere. Maybe that's why Manny destroyed the scry map -- to stop John from being alerted to dangers, to give Manny more control over his access to information.

After all, if you're self-checked into a mental institution, you can check yourself out again, as John did. So he wasn't imprisoned there. He could've left at any time. Manny just made sure that he could keep an eye on John, point him in the right (or rather, wrong) directions.

Manny's increasing come-ons to Zed make sense too, given how much reverence she feels for him. If he gets a member of John's team firmly and unquestioningly in his corner, that gives him more control. If it comes down to John vs. Manny, Zed's reverence for her friendly angel might cause her to side with Manny.

I wish NBC would just put us out of our misery, one way or the other. Not sure what is served by dragging it out. The marathon on SyFy apparently did well, the ratings jumped 6% for the finale, and the show's Facebook page has almost 2.3 million likes.

Surely they have all the data they need to make a decision at this point.

Maybe they'll surprise us and grant a limited 13 episode S2 renewal.
NBC, hopefully will see that once they unshackled the producers from their stand a lone episode demands the show's narrative began to take off.

This show deserves the chance to grow as much as any show on the bubble ever did.

Deciding whether to renew a show is not just about the show itself, it's about the other candidates for the same slot. I think I read that they're waiting until their pilots for next season come in. If they decide there's something strong enough to replace Constantine with, then it's dead (at least on NBC). But if their pilot slate is disappointing, they might decide to give Constantine another shot.

I think the lead actor has pretty much nailed Constantine - I speak without any knowledge of Hellblazer. But he pretty much embodies Constantine for me - they even managed to get scenes of him with a cigarette and stuff.

Also - that promo shot of him with the on-fire hands is very iconic too.

I think the story material might make some people leery (which is what I think of Hannibal too). The production values have been fairly top-notch too. Love the starting 10-second credit sequence too.

Basically - I just want to say that I will hate for this to end here or even soon.

Yeah, I noticed as the show went on that he got closer and closer to actually smoking, until we get to the last few episodes and he actually had lit cigarettes in his mouth.

There are lots of cases where a TV show isn't allowed to get away with something when it first starts out, but is then able to push bit by bit until the network relents. I guess that once you've proven yourself, you can earn more leeway.

Not that I'm crazy about seeing anyone smoke, but I guess nobody who's paying attention would consider John Constantine a role model.

The only reason I even noticed is because everyone was making such a big deal out of him not being allowed to smoke.
