Confusing Comcast/Xfinity Letter

Comcast just sent me a weird letter outlining their "new TV, internet and phone technology platform" Xfinity. It makes it sound as if I need to be calling Comcast/Xfinity for some sort of upgrade (new cable box, etc.). Apparently, it's just some new rebranding of the system that I'm already using (at least, that's my understanding after an internet search--their website was not helpful).

Why are they sending this confusing letter out to current customers?

Edit: By the way, I just signed up for netflix streaming video (for my Wii). I get the disc tomorrow. It looks better than having to pay Comcast $4.99 for a one-day rental (not that they don't have a few random movies for free). Netflix online streaming seems to have many fewer options than Netflex DVD rentals, though.

yeah, Netflix for the Wii has a woefully small selection compared to its DVDs, but it is mighty convenient. i watched The Guild Season 3 last night.

Xfinity is their new name in an attempt to rebrand themselves as a non-shitty cable service. Sort of like how Blackwater renamed itself Xe in an attempt to rebrand itself from a shitty mercenary company to something else. Anyone who pays attention will know it's the same people under another name.

Comcast has a consistent and strong track record of poor performance so a name change will fix it, right? That's the logic.

We had them for years. Then they went HD and we had to get a box. I channel surf like crazy, and there was no way to go up and down the channels. Just one way. And nothing about watching one show and taping another--although that was evidently available a couple of weeks later.

Within a day and a half of setting up the damn boxes, Hubby signed us up for directtv. MUCH better. I like it a lot. Recording on a dvr is a breeze, and I like that I can record all new episodes of a series and forget about it.

Is it possible, on the history of recordings, so eliminate items from the list? Not just "delete" the recording, but remove it from the list of recordings?

That sounds ridiculous. I go up and down channels all the time.

Yeah, I think that you have a defective cable box.

I have a defective cable box. A week ago my box randomly started to freeze on the local ABC station. Turning off the box didn't help. The ABC channel even stayed on my tv with the cable box off. After an hour or so it goes back to normal. I guess that I'll be exchanging it tomorrow.

I got an Xfinity doorknob ad. It looked just like Comcast, but I didn't know they were changing their name. Won't people still be calling them Comcast? That's a pretty massive name change there.

On a side note, doorknob ads are a really good way to tell robbers that no one's home.

Our comcast e-mail addresses will apparently remain the same (as the overall company is still called Comcast--it's just a name change for the division/service, I suppose).

Yeah, that's really messed up.

a few months ago I lost Cartoon Network from my basic/expanded cable lineup & this week I noticed that the History Channel is also gone. And so it begins. :(

I was told my cable box was "old." Well, they lost a customer over their being cheap.

As for directtv. I love it. But of course that "come on" price is inaccurate. There's an HD charge, dvr charge, rental of the receiver charge. It all adds up.

Hubby's in charge of the money end on these things. I'm in charge of dealing with the phone calls when there's problems. Last time, I told Comcast that they were lucky they were dealing with me and not Hubby. He's great and intelligent and all that (and great at work when there's a problem to be handled over the phone), but he sucks when it's some bill thing at home. No patience and audibly angry.

Don Draper is the voice of Xfinity and Mercedes apparently. While Dexter Morgan promotes Dodge trucks to place his victims in.
