CONFIRMED! ENT referenced in Star Trek XI! *SPOILERS*

Something better then Archer's beagle getting killed in a transporter accident.
Like what? I for one would love to see Jolene Blalock's cameo, but that's pretty unrealistic to expect I'm afraid.
Seeing something like the "Charles Tucker building" at the Academy would be cool, but I'd loved if someone was to mention Jonathan Archer being the captain who faced the original "Kobayashi Maru situation."

In the not too distant past, I would have bet just about anything against any kind of ENT reference at all being in this film. Now we have proof that there is at least one and that's not good enough for you guys? I say we shouldn't be so greedy. Yeah, it might not be the most favorable of references, but beggers can't be choosers. It's probably more of a reference than DS9 or VOY will get.

Well, it's like having a non-paying internship finally starting to give you a small income that you really didn't expect. Naturally, you would like to get even more...and more...and more.

What is this Star Trek or Something About Mary? Animal cruelty should be off limits, even Rick Berman didn't come up with anything as despicable as this... Although it fits Simon Pegg's stock-in-trade humour. Sure accidents happen with the transporter and living creatures get caught up in such tragedies, but why make ENT the butt of this joke?

I'm curious... What kind of reference would you (or any other ENT fan for that matter) prefer?
Off the top of my head, the Enterprise NCC-1701 is getting launched in this film I gather. When the ship leaves the dock, after you've shown the bridge crew getting underway, pan towards a port window where some VIPs are gathered together watching it leave. Among the crowd have Scott Bakula in old age make-up. Linger on him for two seconds while a tear rolls down his cheek. If the audience don't twig the importance, he's just an enthusiastic onlooker... like a tourist at Cape Kennedy watching his first Space Shuttle launch.

A Cardassian drink is heard being ordered in a bar. Some fans are scoffing at this too, because the race wasn't seen in Kirk's day. I'd argue that humans may not have run across them but there's no reason other races haven't. Starfleet get beverages transported in from all over the galaxy. They likely drink Romulan ale at a time when probably no human had set foot on Romulas. In ENT, the Orions serve drinks from the Gorn Hegemony for instance.

One rumour I've heard is that Picard will get name checked at some point in the film. I'm betting either he or his ancestor won't be treated as a tasteless gag...

Wouldn't Archer's cameo be a little too much of a stretch? IIRC, he is supposed to die before the NCC-1701 launch (IAMD?), right?
How about seeing Travis Mayweather at the launch instead? :rommie:

Now this is something I would love to see (hear)!

Well how about the NX-01 moored inside a station, seen through large windows as the Uglyprise does a flyby?

It would be in the background, to the audience it would be any other random ship, and we get a quick glimpse of the ship, nice and simple. No lines of dialouge, no overt reference.

I think JJ Abrams is savvy enough to be wary of inciting fans of the various shows. The movie is aimed at casual trek fans and non-fans.As much I would enjoy seeing aged versions of Archer and/or T'Pol it would be irrelevant to anyone else and end up on the cutting room floor. As for the Tucker building.........really too obscure even for the general fandom.

Seeing a picture of the NX-01 in the Captain Pike's ready room would be more than enough for me.

I agree with Angie.

On the animal cruelty, I also think the reference is amusing. It never says what happens to the dog. Maybe he turned into a German Shepard. :) Or like in TOS' Enemy from Within, it was bad!Porthos. (Or the next Beagle Archer had.)

Then again, despite loving animals, I've never been in favor of Archer taking a dog along with him into space. Porthos was a cute little beggar, but unnecessary. I think the only time the dog worked as a device was in Broken Bow when it climbed up onto T'Pol's leg looking for a head rub.

Rather than continuing wondering, I went to the horse's mouth on this particular spoiler. The following are quotes from articles by various entities who attended Abrams' screening of the scenes from the movie, with other spoilers excised.

From empireonline.com:
...Scotty...experimented with transporter technology and dematerialised the admiral's dog.

From visimag.com:
Scotty relates that "his attempts to experiment with transporter technology resulted in the tragic loss of the admiral's dog.

From TrekMovie.com, a poster who attended the screening sent in a report that included:
Scotty explains that his experimental beaming worked on fruit but he said "didn't turn out so well for Admiral Archer's beagle."

I saw another reference (unsubstantiated--I couldn't track down the source) to this "transporter experiment" being conducted by Scotty specifically to prove it would work on a living creature.

Nope, it doesn't look good for the dog. :(

There are at least two threads in the Star Trek XI forum that reference this spoiler, and over 400 posts, which I didn't go through completely (ironically, I'm trying to avoid spoilers  ), but I got the impression that this is a plot point rather than merely a throwaway line.

What we're looking at here is what these writers thought would be an effective ENT reference for the majority of the people they hoped would come see this movie.

A nice piece of artwork of the NX-01 on someone's wall, a la Archer's ready room, would have been fine with me. I liked that touch in ST:TMP, too.

It's not just that it's a cheap reference it's also because that reference doesn't make any sense though, the dog would be like 120 or something.

Or a small model etc, yup that works too.

I read in the director's cut of TMP, they were thinking of adding the NX-01 to the photos of the Enterprises, but didn't. Does it make an appearance somewhere else?

They reference a Beagle. I'm assuming Archer likes the breed of dog and got another one after Porthos had passed on.

^ That's what I'm thinking. Maybe he owned at least four beagles, all named after a different Musketeer. :p
