CONFIRMED! ENT referenced in Star Trek XI! *SPOILERS*

I think it said "upstate New York," but what the hey...Schenectady, Glen Falls, Syracuse, Rochester...it's all good. Maye even Binghamton, but I think that's more central. I get the feeling Archer and Porthos would be happing in small cities like this rather than your Buffalos or even Albanys.

Columbia County :)

Re: CONFIRMED! ENT referenced in Star Trek XI!

On the former president issue:

I think the incorrect usages of the title "President" and the honorific "Mr. President" are caused by two things. First, we accord the POTUS, an elected official and public servant, far too much unearned honor

They have to spend years of their lives campaigning across an entire continent and gain the confidence of at least 150 million people, and then they have to try to earn it again in just four years. I'm not sure how much more earning they could do to deserve to be called "Mister President" after they leave office!

as though he were roylaty (which was not the founding fathers' intent)

Well, not exactly. The Founding Fathers didn't have a unified intent with regards to how the President of the United States should be styled, addressed, or otherwise treated. John Adams expended a LOT of time early in the US Senate's history trying to convince Congress that President Washington should be addressed as "His/Your Majesty" because he wanted to make sure that the President -- whose title, after all, had the connotations to people of that era of, say, someone who runs a small business rather than a head of state -- was treated with the same respect and deference by foreign emissaries that a king would. Thomas Jefferson, on the other hand, was so disdainful of the idea of giving too much honor to the President that he even ended the practice of giving the State of the Union address in person because it was too much like the King's Speech from the Throne for him. George Washington was somewhere in between, and it was him who came up with the idea of addressing the President as "Mister President."

and thus lionize men who have held the job in the past. People have a strong desire, it seems, to be "ruled by a king." and to accord that "king" honor. Second, it is appropriate to refer to almost anyone else who is retired by the highest rank/office they achieved in their lifetime, and we simply drag that convention into ex-POTUS references as well. It's ignorance of the proper etiquette and protocol, but it's well-intentioned ignorance.

I think the second bit -- that in every other situation, it's appropriate to refer to a person by their highest-earned title -- is more likely than the first.

And I'm not really all that convinced that it's improper. Sounds to me more like the ideas of propriety have simply evolved, and the formal etiquette dispensers just haven't caught up with society's new standards yet.

In more spoiler information that came out today, it seems that it is indeed Scotty that tragically ends the life of Admiral Archer's dog in a transporter experiement gone wrong.

I just hope we aren't left hanging on whether it's truly Jonathan Archer's beagle.

I was wondering if this thread was going to get back on topic.

And... ewww.
bleah.gif
Doesn't matter anymore whose beagle it is. I'm picturing the transporter accident from ST:TMP, and... gaaah.

Now I'm hoping they don't use this reference as a throwaway joke. Not holding my breath, tho.

Maybe if the reference were ""didn’t turn out so well for Admiral Archer’s helmsman" people wouldn't have a problem ;)

A better ENT reference would have been to include Denobulans or Xindi characters in the movie and they wouldn't have to even mention ENT and still reference ENT.

:guffaw: *snort*

Now we're gettin' into proper tasteless-joke territory.

I'm just thinking, if you wanted to put a passing Enterprise reference into this flick to make the fans smile (yes, there are some Trek fans who don't wile away the hours crapping on Enterprise), there are so many other ways to do it.

I know-- put up a bronze statue of Archer somewhere, and decapitate it in a rollicking motorbike chase! Oh, wait...

On the bright side, at least we're GETTING a reference to the show and the Archer timeline. As poorly as many viewers and critics responded to the series and with the visual/aesthetic reboot to the franchise happening in the new movie at least J.J. Abrams respects established canon enough to make passing reference to a character and his dog from a low-rated spinoff series that got mixed reviews at best.

As an ENT fan, I'm hoping this isn't the only reference to the series, whether spoken or seen. I have a hunch we'll see the NX-01, either in a wall painting, in a museum, or something. One of the few positives of TATV is that Riker confirms the NX-01 still exists in the 24th Century ("What about the ship itself?).

If I were in charge of the movie, I'd have a statue or big formal painting of Archer in dress uniform on Academy grounds. The non-canon novel about Kirk and Spock at the Academy by Shatner and the Reeves-Stevenses published this past year has an engineering study hall or building named after Trip and mentions Archer presided at the dedication of one or more buildings after the Academy was founded.

SPOILER ALLERT!!!

At least two people who have seen parts of the movie reference a line Scotty says in a scene where he and Kirk meet Leonard Nimoy's Spock. They're talking about an experiemental beaming technique, and Scotty explains that it worked on fruit but, "didn’t turn out so well for Admiral Archer’s beagle."

Let the flood gates open! Is Archer alive? Will we see him? Is this beagle Porthos the Tenth? Why would Archer let Scotty use his beagle in an experimental beaming? Was it really an experiement or was Porthos in danger?

Grandson probably.

Several nights sleep and I'm still boiling mad at this being the reference. I guess this serves me right for wishing the show could be acknowledged in the first place...

Enterprise is once again ridiculed, but this time with an official endorsement from Paramount.

Next time I ask for something, just make sure the phase pistol is set to kill. :scream:

I'm curious... What kind of reference would you (or any other ENT fan for that matter) prefer?
