Okay, a couple more thoughts on why Netflix picked this up (besides my constant re-watching of the '82 movie):
- The Witcher was a big hit for Netflix, and while they are quite busy mining that IP (with shooting on season 2 going on right now, a prequel and an animated film in the works), it is a kind of Sword & Sorcery that is very similar to Conan. It helps, of course, that Conan is even more famous than The Witcher was before that show launched, both in the U.S. and internationally.
- As mentioned in my post above, the production company probably had a lot of work already done while the show was in development for Amazon, so Netflix had more to go on than just a regular pitch. Might even be that rumored Frost-Giant's Daughter pilot.
- The show will either shoot internationally, or using the video screen backgrounds used on The Mandalorian (what are they called, anyway). Since shooting in the U.S. is either illegal or at least very restricted right now, thanks to CoVID, picking a series up that would be shooting in other countries with less restrictions* and/or in a controlled studio in front of those walls would be easier.
