Complete Original Series?

TripleB

Newbie
Growing up (born in 1967) I rarely watched the original Star Trek series...for some unknown reason!!! I remember watching shows like Battle Star Galactica and being enthralled with the Star Wars films, so I'm not really sure why I didn't find myself watching Star Trek more often.

Anyway, I was watching TV today and they had a Star Trek'athon' going on so I watched several episodes and loved every one I watch.

I went to see if they offered the complete original series on Blu Ray or DVD and found several different options...one released in 2009, one released in 2016, etc. I looked at a few reviews and some said that the newer complete series had changed some of the episodes (special effects or something) and the episodes weren't in order.

So, can someone give me some guidance on which "complete series" I should purchase if I want the episodes in order and in their original form?

Thanks for any and all help!!!

There are two editions in 2016 I believe. The 2016 is a repackage of the 2009 set and there is a second version for the 50th Anniversary that comes with the original crew movies and animated series included and also has an additional disc of bonus features I believe. The actual discs for the original series itself in all three sets is identical (save for packaging).

The episodes are on the discs in the original transmission order on my set (which are the original blu-ray HD releases and therefore the same discs as the other sets). Some people prefer them in production order. I don't think it makes a huge amount of difference personally.

The changes refer to the fact that a decade ago the show was remastered for HD and the special effects were redone for each episode. Both the updated version and the original version of each episode is available to watch on the discs.

Any Blu-ray complete set is the one to get. Only get the DVDs if you're willing to forego the original effects.

Unless you already have the DVDs released in 2004/05 which have the original effects only! :nyah:

To be more clear on the "new" special effects on the Blu-rays: The original effects were done using a gorgeous 11-foot long physical spaceship model and state-of-the-art (for the late 1960s) movie compositing techniques, though on a TV show's limited budget and schedule. The Blu-Rays offer, as an alternative, "modern" computer-generated special effects that vary in quality from good, to PC game-level crap. You may choose which effects you see when you start each episode.

So no matter which version of the original series I get, as long as I get Blu Ray version of the complete series, I have the option of watching either the original effects or the new effects?

Are you saying the DVD version of the complete original series do not have the original effects?

Can anyone give some links to which version you feel is the best complete original series set to purchase?

I appreciate everyone's input so far!!!

Hi, TripleB. I hope this brings some clarity:

- The oldest DVD editions, circa 1999, have the original fx only. These old discs still look great to me, but you don't get much in the way of extra features at all.

- The remastered DVD set, circa 2008, has the new CGI fx only. This set has a very "high end" DVD quality, to the point where they almost look like HD, especially on a 720p TV set. Lots of extras are included.

- The Blu-ray set, circa 2016, has both the original fx and the new CGI fx. You can toggle between them and see whichever you want. This set is in true HD and the image is very sharp. You get all the extras that were included in the 2008 DVDs, plus a couple more.

In the end, I'd say buy the complete series on Blu-ray, because then you'll never change your mind and shell out for an upgrade.

You forgot the clam shell season sets released in 2005/2006 on DVD. Those have the original effects as well.

Those are the ones that I was talking about Bill! Plus I must admit I prefer the effects used in Star Trek Continues to the ones in the new special effects sets!
