Communicators in the brig?

I just watched "Repression" last night and for the first time noticed that Tuvok was still wearing his own communicator while in the brig and this was how he was able to "activate" Chakotay.

Why on earth would you allow a prisoner to keep his own communicator. I remember Sudar calling the bridge from the brig once but I can't remember if it was his own or Tuvok's communicator. Also, I don't recall if Tom Paris got to keep his while in solitary for 30 days.

Yeah, when I saw this episode I thought the same. In every other episode that I can think of the com badge is removed. For obvious security issues.

Wouldn't they leave it on for the scenaristic purpose you pointed out, Arachnia? Maybe they couldn't work the scenario around it.

This is a bit removed, but it reminds me of how TV show (male) protagonists always happen to have grown a manly stubble in the precise episode where they're going to have romance.
What a coincidence! lol

Tom Paris should have had a larger beard by the end of his 30 days sentence in the brig.
Surprise ... it was essentially 3 days worth of growth.

As for Tuvok having a comm-badge ... I would surmise the writers made a mistake (as usual).
He could have used Janeways for example.

Nope, he had to take it off.

Maybe a once a week Paris gets to groom himself or take a shower?

Come to think of it, there is no bathroom in the holding cells.

I don't have a problem with crew in the brig retaining their communicators. But were there some regulation against it, then Tuvok, as head of security, would have been the one in charge of making sure they were removed. Wolf in charge of the hen house, so to speak; great choice for a saboteur.

It should be noted that Tuvok was placed in the brig not as a punitive measure, nor as a means of isolating him from the rest of the crew, but as an unusual means of preventing him from doing physical harm to others while he was being examined and his inner devils exorcised. "Most" of Tuvok was a cooperating member of the crew, not an uncooperative prisoner. And as far as they knew, the uncooperating part was already held at check by that forcefield.

So it would make perfect sense to leave him equipped with his communicator, so that he could use it to call the people who were trying to help him. Communicating with Tuvok was of essence in solving the crisis, after all.

Admittedly, our other heroes at that point were aware that Tuvok had been "infected" through communications. But they didn't seem to comprehend that others could be similarly infected; indeed, the message from home that had corrupted Tuvok had had no obvious effect on the others who had studied it, so Janeway had reason to be confident.

Ever since TNG, starship brig interior walls have been heavily decorated with all sorts of protrusions, insets, grilles, sockets and whatnot. One would hope they are there for functional purposes! Thus, it's likely that, just like the TNG set has a washbasin hidden behind a sliding panel, it has a similarly hidden lavatory. And probably enough hidden features to perform an emergency appendixitis surgery if need be...

Whether the lavatory would come with some sort of foldout privacy covers... I doubt it. Why should the prisoner have privacy? That's a maximum security facility, really - the entire front wall is a transparent forcefield for a rational purpose, for denying the prisoner the possibility of hiding. Certainly he or she should not be wilfully provided that possibility, then.

Bathrooms in Trek are a myth. ;)
Well, there's also that toilet that Kirk pulls out in the movies to sit on and have a think. And B'Elanna pulls a sink out from the wall and splashes her face with water at one point.

That works for me. Thanks! :)

Speaking of Paris in the Brig for 30 days, without Communicator, he was busted down to 'Ensign,

Does anyone know which Episode he was promoted back to Lt. Or did it just happen?

I must have missed it.

^ Sadly, you didn't miss much.

They really could have easily had Tuvok not had his own Commbadge in the Brig, and just charge Janeway for hers when he was going to "activate" Chakotay. Personally I think it makes whoever was running the brig that day look pretty stupid.
