Commercials that Fail

The new Kia ad just seems creepy to me. :p

When local commercials go bad..

Red House Furniture features products for both Blacks and Whites.

(BTW - how do you embed a video in a post?)

That can't be serious! If it is though, even better.

It's not. The two guys singing in the commercial make deliberately bad but attention grabbing commercials for small local businesses. Although they were inspired by some particularly awful local commercials.

Can't believe I failed to mention the bubbly, unfunny, exceedingly annoying Progressive Insurance girl. Those commercials have been taunting me for many, many years. It's like it's never going to end.

Yeah, I don't know what Kia is going for there, but the strong urban steretotypes there being represented as hamsters (?) seems sorta offensive.

And I sorta [heart] Flo, though I don't think that pictures does her much justice.

I always get that song in my head though.

Annoying ads like The Progressive Lady for some people aren't necessarily "fail" though if it makes you remember the product.

I see that argument a lot (you remember the product) but that doesn't seem to help if you remember the product so much that it annoys you to the point of going out of your way to not use it/buy it.

The ads that promise to enlarge "that certain part of a man's body!"

Given that it's okay to say the word penis on national TV these days, why say that certain part? it makes you wonder what they're really talking about.

So you take this pill and it enlarges your prostate?

Now, now, we can't be saying "penis" on TV even if we can, there might be kids watching! Think of the children! Save the "penis talk" for that quirky sitcom about sex-loving twenty-somethings.

The Quizno's kitten commercials are so annoyingly awful they make me long for the creepy Burger King.
AAAUUGH!! Those commercials are so horrible, they make me want to order a footlong kitten sandwich. Toasted.

I mean, really, who is the target demographic for those ads? Tone-deaf 15-year-olds?

This board has always been chock full of people opposed to anti-humor. There must be something about liking sci-fi that ends up killing that part of people's personalities.

I can't believe you all hate Flo.

Actually, they made their way alot further north than that. 'Ole Cal and his dog Spot were on TV in Alaska as well. We had a Cal Worthington Ford in Anchorage...and so they slapped that cowboy redneck hawking his cars onto our screens too.
Ha! I remember seeing those horrid commercials when I was living up in Anchorage, way back when. Ah, memories.

I remember them from Seattle, too.

Seems that Cal's Reign of Redneck Horror encompassed the entire west coast!

Here's a little trip down redneck memory lane for all you Cal Worthington fans:

"Hey! We're tryin' to win a trip to the superbowl, and we gotta sell TEN GILLION trucks to do it! And here's how we're gonna do it!"

He actually DOES 'stand upon his head' in this one!:

And remember how he used to say "If I don't have the best deal in town, I'll eat a bug!"?

Yeah it makes me remember the product - as in "I will never purchase that product." (as Trekker4747 pointed out)

This is why I will never purchase, or purchase anything from:

Tom Shane
Verizon (can you hear me now?)
Mazda (Zoom zoom/ Saved by zero)
Aflac
Freecreditreport.com
Subway (5 dollar footlong song)
Chili's (I want my baby back baby back baby back - food is a joke there anyway)
eHarmony
Old Navy
Head-on (I could never even figure out what their product does!)
Progressive Insurance (#1 due to sheer longevity and stupidity of the ads. You can get "Stop the Flo" T-shirts online. Yay! )
Domino's Pizza (and I worked for them for 12 years! ugh)

Just to name a few. ;)

On the other side of the coin, I would someday consider purchasing insurance from Geico. While their ads are hit and miss, at least they make an effort to make their ads entertaining, while also mixing it up pretty well and not just sticking with one thing. I'm sure plenty of people hate them, but I appreciate the attempt at creativity.

Wait?! He'll take your jewlery and give you cash for it no questions asked?! Way to prompt possible criminal activity there, Cash Man!

He's been arrested at least once before for having stolen goods, but keeps coming back.

On the subject of terrible regional advertising...

I love the Kia hamster commercial!! I just can't figure out how they got the hamsters to keep the hoodies on long enough to film it!?!

I wonder if people did this years ago as well:

I will never use

Charmin (Don't tell me what to squeeze)
Dr. Pepper (You may be a pepper but I'm certainly not!)
Alka Seltzer ("Plop plop fizz fizz", "I can't believe I ate the whole thing")
Chuck Wagon
Wendy's ("Where's the Beef")
Parkay
:)

Mix it up? Well, I guess they had both the Gecko *and* the Caveman but boy if they didn't run them into the ground.

I hate that Dunkin' Donuts commercial where the guy in the drive-thru places his order then asks "And could you tell me where I can get a great cup of coffee?"
The DD employee says, "Sure, just tell me how you take it, and pull up to the first window."
The guy gets this exaggerated look of disbelief on his face and goes, "ooookay."
She hands him the coffee, and he looks like he's utterly shocked that he was able to buy coffee and donuts in the same place.

WHO IN THE HELL DOESN'T KNOW THAT DUNKIN' DONUTS HAS COFFEE?
Okay, I think you've missed the point. It's not that people don't know that DD has coffee -- it's that people think they've got to go to Starbucks or some other foofy "barista joint" to get good coffee. Like, really, you can get lattes and cappucinos and espressos at DD?? And for less than $4.50, too.

[small voice]I live in the urbs and I love the Kia hamsters, stereotypes and all.[/small voice]

anyone else wanna see Erin Esurance & Hondas Mr. Opportunity hook up? :p I was thinking that theyd make a cute couple while watching a new Honda ad were he's dancing in some club the other day(unfortunatley I cant find the ad on Youtube.)

then again Erin seems like a sweet gal & Mr. O kinda sounds a bit douchebaggy.

Well the Gecko dude is their mascot, so they of course run ads with him still from time to time. I thought the Caveman thing was pretty good, and they still do some of those (that sitcom attempt was an nightmare, granted). They've had many other different campaigns though, including the one now with the dude who does the ones about the Waltons, Abe Lincoln, Elmer Fudd, etc. Like I said, I can understand how they would rub some the wrong way, but I still think they have some of the best advertising out there, as far as advertising goes.

Can't disagree with anything on your list. ;)

Add the iRenew Bracelet to my list. I mean, really? "Celebrities spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars for this technology", but I can get it for only $19.95!!! So I put this bracelet on my wrist, and it gives me energy and "balance". I find it insulting that they would think I would be that stupid. The demonstration (which is completely nonsensical) in which the guy pulls a dude off balance while he's not wearing the bracelet, but the dude is harder to pull off balance while he's wearing the iRenew. Huh? Just wow.
