Coming next from IDW comics?

What should be the next batch of IDW Trek comics? Who by?

Oh yes, I love "Double Blind"! But Naraht fits into the other category of
"elements that haven't been explored much".

The minor TOS characters had only bit parts in the first Marvel series - equivalent to their minor roles on the air - and I might share the theory that they represented some loophole in the contract, if I hadn't read the Amazing Heroes article on Trek comics some years later, in which people who worked on the DC series described their own experiences with their clueless Paramount licensing contact. When they asked if it was okay to show Christine Chapel aboard the post-TWOK Enterprise, the response they got was "Who is Christine Chapel"?

I wasn't sure myself if the Denobulan in Blood Will Tell was meant to be Phlox - given the context, I just guessed that the artist was using him as a template for a generic Denobulan, much as Commander Kuri in "The Time Trap" looked remarkably like Koloth (twins?).

And yes, I was referring to the Quantum Leap comics. I'm not aware that any other of the ENT cast has ever made a significant appearance in the medium, so I don't know who else the IDW editor could have been referring to.

The panel and narration were specifically depicting an event from the ENT two-parter "Affliction/Divergence." The characters in the panel are undoubtedly meant to represent Phlox and the Klingon doctor Antaak, since they were the ones "present at the birth" of the smooth-headed Klingon subspecies and, in a way, directly responsible for its creation. Even if Messina wasn't specifically using their likenesses, there's no one else it could possibly be.

Wow, cool to see some fans of my comic work. Having started in comics in 1985, I do have some plans to return to comics this year (working on a Shatner comic, for one). And if IDW calls, I'm certainly ready!

Just remember the little people, such as the one you shared a New York elevator with in January 1992. ;)

Hrrrmmm, sorry, not remembering the exact circumstances. Would this be the Fangoria Horror con? I mostly remember Jeffrey Combs and I both having hotel room problems and bonding over that as he had a new baby. We shared an elevator ride and a lot of commiseration, and he still remembers me years later ...

(Don't count on ENT, though; they've stated that that's partly an issue of likeness permissions, i. e. "a certain cast member" - which can only mean Scott Bakula, as none of the others have ever had their likenesses appear in comics - is so demanding about his likeness being EXACTLY how he wants it that the continual art revisions would be impossible to deal with.)

One of the busier DC artists said that Patrick Stewart and Marina Sirtis had likeness approval, and that Stewart was demanding changes all the time, which drove DC crazy.

Stewart's likeness rights would have had to transfer to IDW, right? So how are the TNG comics any less of a hair-pulling experience than an Enterprise comic would be?

Also, Bakula may or may not have been the most popular character on the series (probably not). So I think you could do an Enterprise comic series and just use Archer in the "Admiral describing the assingnment" role to a large extent.

Because for every hair you pull producing a TNG comic you get how ever many times more popular TNG is than Enterprise back in moneys. It's worth the effort for them, Enterprise doesn’t have nearly the same size of fanbase as TNG to get IDW the same sort of profits.

The licensing issues seem to be very flexible, as Tuvok and Annika Hansen also have small roles in "The Last Generation", and they never appeared in TNG at all. Either whoever approves these things is being very accommodating, or just not spotting them! (Which wouldn't be unprecedented. Marvel's first ST license only allowed them to use characters and concepts from ST:TMP, yet that series featured cameos by Kyle, Lt. DeSalle and Admiral Fitzpatrick - probably unrecognized as minor faces from TOS by the person in charge of approvals.)

How small are their roles? Just cameos? Like I said before, I think the license allows minor roles for characters from other series, just so long as the story isn't about them.

CBS may allow it on a case-by-case basis (or overlook it entirely), but I'd be very surprised if that leeway is granted in the contract language. Why would anyone pay for the Voyager license if your TNG license let you use a Voyager character for a few panels every issue?

You don't suppose IDW told CBS, "Oh, Tuvok's fair game. Tim Russ was in Star Trek Generations" and CBS bought it?

Mmmmm. I don't think Marina Sirtis has likeness approval. She wasn't "big enough" during the initial contract signing, but she may have won some approval on the later movie tie-ins?

Sometimes the likeness approvals relate to cover art only, which is what Patrick Stewart has. I'm pretty sure the license holders don't have to send him all internal artwork. I do know he also quashed the design of the Picard Toby jug, so Applause had to omit his character from their range.

LeVar Burton has likeness approval, at least on his action figures - his status (from "Roots" and "Reading Rainbow") gave his agents more clout at the initial contract signing. He quashed one figure because it didn't have a hairstyle that matched the production.

It seems that Scott Bakula's likeness approval might go beyond cover art for comics. There was once a painted series of "Quantum Leap" comics and if he had quibbles about the internal art in that, then he may have insisted on tighter demands in his ENT contract. It adds weeks (or months) to the production of a comic if the internal artwork has to go to and fro with an actor.

Paula Block (CBS Consumer Products) is spotting them - she's an avid ST fan, after all, and she allows most of those cameos on a case-by-case- basis.

Yep.

Nope.

Hmmm, over in the thread about Pocket's 2010 schedule, it was revealed that the DS9-R was jumping ahead five years and will be in synch with the other series story-lines. While I'm not a big fan of the idea, it would give IDW a lot of story-telling space in the DS9-R if they were ever to pick up the DS9 license.

I would like to see:

-More Alien Spotlights with such races as the Tholians, another Gorn (more about their culture this time though the Captain Terrell cameo was great), Nausicaans, Breen, Caitians, Deltans, Remans, Son'a, Trill, Cardassians, another Andorians, Bolians, Tellarites, another Orions, Q, El Aurians, Jarada, Talarians, more Romulans

-More NF. Though I didn't like the Mirror Universe story, I do like these characters and would like to see PAD take another crack at it.

-Excelsior: A good way to dabble with the Lost Era. I've always wanted to see more about the post-Undiscovered Country scene

-Titan: It would be cool to see many of the diverse species that are described in the books

-24th century Countdown era

Writers: PAD, KRAD, David Mack, CLB, Andy Mangels

I'm just going to wildly and somewhat unrealistically suggest "Alien Spotlight" become a continuing series and feature all those aliens and more. As for the current series, can someone fill me in? We've had another Romulan, a Klingon, a Tribble, and a Q. I heard we were getting Betazoid, Tholian and Ferengi, but there's only two slots left. Which one got axed? I hope it's Ferengi, not because I dislike them but because Tholian and Betazoid would be more interesting. Not much action in a Betazoid story, I imagine. It would be nice to see how they worked that, and nice to see a Betazoid story not involving telepathy, perhaps?:)

For the most current round there was a Tribble, Klingon, and Romulan. I bought all of those. I don't remember the Q Alien Spotlight. I concur that there should be an Alien Spotlight continuing series. That would be pretty awesome. It's cool they are planning Ferengi, Tholian, and Betazoid books.

Though it wasn't listed, I wouldn't mind seeing a S31 series or miniseries, but I'm not sure if that could be done due to licensing issues.

Didn't see this one the first time when I looked at the choices, but I would love to have a continuation or a revival of the Early Voyages comics. I loved those books. Still waiting for the omnibus to come out.
