Coming in 4K - Star Trek's 1-IV??

There's a big difference between that overly sharp and crisp 4K footage of the Italian Riviera (or whatever) that they show on the TVs on display on the showroom floor, and actually watching a feature film in 4K. You probably won't really notice any extra sharpness compared to a regular blu-ray. But the color quality of HDR is where the format shines.

Most often true unless a projector sized image is involved (I have an 84 inch diagonal 16:9 screen in a smallish room so I’m considering an upgrade to 4k in a couple of years) OR if sitting close enough to the display (I use a 43 inch 4K TV as my monitor—I can see both HDR and sharper image—but I doubt I’ll need 8k unless I ever put the home cinema in a much larger room with a much bigger screen).

We've got a decent, if not huge, 4K TV and it's definitely HDR that's the biggest benefit. I can't tell a vast difference between HD and UHD material, but HDR is a game-changer.

I've had the opportunity to compare the 4K version of ST II (Director's) with the HD version and the 4K version is just much nicer to watch. It's clearer, sharper, and the colors are better. On a good 4K TV, it's well worth it in 4K. These days, if you are buying a TV, it's not easy to find an HD only TV of good enough quality. Most TVs these days are are 4K. I recently bought a 65" LG OLED C1 and it's excellent. 4K is very nice especially with HDR.
I have a 4K TV but at the time I made that post, I was still getting used to the settings.

New master, yes ... but will it have "improved" (in my opinion messed up) special effects or will it stick to the original?
Do you mean the Director's Edition? It looks like that's going to be a separate release, not included with this set.

Much thanks!

Definitely looks like a winner, with the improvements all around being given some proper polish, and less DNR to get rid of that waxy look. If this is the standard for all upcoming sets, it looks like a winner as well as a definitive set.

After seeing other movies in 4K, of which most were given fair amounts of deft handling as well, it's all nothing short of awesome that as many movies (and shows) as possible are being preserved as best as possible (and the best possible resolution top preserve maximum quality as a basepoint) as the film negs will eventually decompose and succumb to the vinegar effect. For more on this effect, don't bother with salad dressing, try these instead:

https://www.nfsa.gov.au/preservation/preservation-glossary/vinegar-syndrome
If the pretty pictures from that site alone don't give you nightmares, read on to these gems:

https://theconversation.com/histori...-we-thought-thanks-to-vinegar-syndrome-131712
https://www.filmpreservation.org/preservation-basics/vinegar-syndrome
etc

Depending on manufacture quality, even "newer" negs (think: 1990s! sheesh...) could be in worse degradation than you might imagine and not just color fade (which is easily fixed once digitized... but not all problems are that easy to correct...)

"While some fans may be inclined to wait for a more complete box set of all ten films remastered in 4K and Blu-ray, hoping to get a better bargain or different packaging, please keep in mind that it was exactly this kind of bargain-hunting mentality that doomed the planned Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Remastered effort. We’ve all been waiting a very long time for the classic Star Trek films to be remastered in 4K, and Paramount is clearly releasing them as they complete the work. The message we should all be trying to send the studio is that we want all of these films on physical 4K and Blu-ray, not just the first few. The only way to do that for sure is by voting with your wallet. There can be little doubt that the decision makers at Paramount+ would be quite happy to have all of these remasters as a streaming exclusive. So not only is Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection recommended, my advice would be: Don’t delay in ordering it."

I didn't know this, but according to Bill Hunt the Blu-Rays are also being released separately. And sure enough, each of them is on Amazon in poster-authentic packaging. So there's more than one way to vote with your wallet.

I am only buying the movies I like because there's no point in investing in a movie I won't watch or touch but because of this thread if V is remastered I will buy it but I still believe the studio was been weak in extra content. I think if they would share more extras, like how Disney seem to hit a Home Run on that front, their Star Trek movies would get more buyers. These movies have an interesting history as good as the movies themselves and I feel Paramount should share more of their pre-production, production, and post-production work which would be worth the purchase for me.

So will the BD version of TMP be unaltered or "improved"?

As far as I know, the new Blu-Rays will use the new 4K master, not the previous one.

And the 4K "Director's Edition" is coming in 2022.

I love bonus material. Strangely enough, a large number of buyers never watch the bonus content. And, of course, streaming sites rarely include bonus stuff from the physical media versions.

I didn't know this, but according to Bill Hunt the Blu-Rays are also being released separately.

I thought this was part of the original announcement, several months ago.

I believe why dvd's sold so well was because when it was advertised studios sold it as more than just the movie there was something else which was a must own. Honestly, I don't think it's fair for you to assume the large number of buyers never watched those bonus content. When I have movie night me and my friends love watching the movie and after the materials, but Paramounts content has always been too light even during its dvd days.

What I want to know is why are we paying for blu-ray disc versions that we won't watch?
