Coming in 4K - Star Trek's 1-IV??

I wonder how big the file size would typically be for a 4K feature film.
UltraHD blu-ray discs have a few different formats, with 50 GB being the lowest capacity.

But aren’t they working on the 4K version now? Must be just a cheap upscale.

The DE Team is working on a 4K TMP DE, due in 2022. It will NOT be a cheap upscale.

You can see a film crew member (possibly an assistant director) holding an extra before she walks by. Is this well known?

He is often discussed over at the TMP Appreciation Society Facebook group.

It is one of those little controversies. If the DE Team chooses to digitally remove him for the forthcoming 4K DE, people will complain. If they leave him in, people will complain. Being in a futuristic silver crew jacket, he does tend to blend in.

Similarly, the orange (Spock, Science) and green (McCoy, Medical) division armbands on the suede fieldjackets actually switch colours during the conclusion to TMP. Nimoy and Kelley were supposedly being mischievous, to see if anyone would notice. The DE Team discussed whether to digitally correct the colours (a relatively easy fix) last time - and ended up choosing to leave in the actors' in-joke. But even if they had switched the colours, the jacket hems are different lengths! Again, if the DE Team chooses to digitally change the colours for the forthcoming 4K DE in 2022, people will complain. If they leave as is, people will complain. ;)

Yep, TSFS has updated for me on Apple+, and it looks lovely. It’s bright, has natural colours and there’s no awful DNR or edge enhancement that plagued the Blu-ray.

Can’t wait for the 4K HDR versions to drop, they should be a treat.

It's nice to see the opening credits not squeezed in TSFS!

TVH is the one I'm looking forward to most. I think it's the only Trek film to get a cinematography nod for the Oscars. Not the Trek film you'd expect to get such a nod, but I always suspected it was for certain scenes like when Spock is speaking with his mother. That's just a beautifully lit set, and I can't wait to see it in a proper transfer free of edge enhancement and DNR.

No offense to Paramount, but I really don’t need the regular Blu-ray’s in the 4K set.

You don't but there are people who haven't upgraded to 4k yet and the Blu-rays in the set are from the new masters, so they'll get a quality increase too and be prepared for when/if they upgrade. Before I had 4k I was buying 4k editions because I knew I'd get a new TV at some point.

Just seems like an unnecessary increase in cost when they could release two versions.

The majority of UHD releases seem to include a regular Blu-ray. At least they're the new masters and not just the old discs repressed again.

Actually, come to think of it, do we know that's the case? Now I'm thinking they might be the same old 2009 BDs again.

Those old HD transfers are going away. Even streamers like iTunes and Vudu have the new transfers that will be on these discs.

I wonder if the new transfers will supplant the HD transfers doing the rounds on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Paramount+ and AMC+.

For 4K releases, if the source is film then chances are it's going to be full 4K. Modern movies with CGI tend to be rendered at 2K because, even with today's technology, to render all that CGI in native 4K is prohibitive, especially if they have to change light sources or other objects to re-render due to a mistake, et cetera. But a lot of films from the 90s and earlier have benefited, and the old Star Wars movies (not the prequels!) look incredible.

Here's a fun article of titles released:

I don’t know… I didn’t think the original Star Wars looked as great in 4K as the others. Maybe they were just upscales

The original Star Wars had gone through so much processing it’s not surprising it doesn’t look as great as other 4K titles.

Still not sure what I think about 4K. I think it looks too clean and clear for its own good. Almost to the point where it starts to look like a cartoon. Regular 1920x1080 HD feels like just the right type of Happy Medium. At least to me.
I've had the opportunity to compare the 4K version of ST II (Director's) with the HD version and the 4K version is just much nicer to watch. It's clearer, sharper, and the colors are better. On a good 4K TV, it's well worth it in 4K. These days, if you are buying a TV, it's not easy to find an HD only TV of good enough quality. Most TVs these days are are 4K. I recently bought a 65" LG OLED C1 and it's excellent. 4K is very nice especially with HDR.
