Coming in 4K - Star Trek's 1-IV??

Out of interest was Star Wars 4k really that good. Its an insanely expensive set IMO.
I've not got a 4k player and honestly haven't felt compelled as yet to buy one. Bluray seems very good to me and streaming.

I bought them individually over about six months time. Honestly, haven’t watched all of them. I think it’s the best Star Wars has ever looked. But is it a necessary upgrade? That’s up to you but I wouldn’t buy a 4K player just for these movies. The blu-ray, iTunes and D+ versions are pretty good.

Yeah I'd probably get them eventually when the tech becomes much cheaper, which it almost always does. I'm probably happy to wait another 5 or so years.

I too bought the 4ks individually, just to get the 4k-remastered Blu-Rays. If you bought just the Disney BDs separately, they were still the Fox ones upon loading.

I'm a completist. I ultimately want the option of watching any random version at all. McClunkey.

The 4k remaster looks less glossy, at least on Blu-Ray. But I have far from the best equipment to really be able to tell.

The new transfers are showing up in HD only (for now) on various services. I've seen the new HD masters of TMP and TSFS on iTunes and TWOK, TSFS and TVH on Vudu.

Yep, TSFS has updated for me on Apple+, and it looks lovely. It’s bright, has natural colours and there’s no awful DNR or edge enhancement that plagued the Blu-ray.

Can’t wait for the 4K HDR versions to drop, they should be a treat.

As far as TWOK goes that's been out in HD for a long long time. Are you saying that it's different than it has been? Because it was the only one that had been given a proper restoration up till now. So in what way has it been updated or changed? Thanks if you can explain!

EDIT: what I'm trying to say is that Wrath of Khan was not expected to get an update because it had been fully restored in 4K resolution back in 2016.

Now I understand thank you very much and I presume it's the director's cut as well that's the theatrical that they offer.

The Director's Cut is a separate purchase. It's already 4K and HDR10. I wonder if they're going to add Dolby Vision to it.

Hello everyone. First post here. I have noticed something on Star Trek TMP that I never had in all these years of watching this film. I googled it but didn't find anything. Itś a shot right after Kirk exits the shuttle at Star Fleet Headquarters. You can see a film crew member (possibly an assistant director) holding an extra before she walks by. Is this well known? If so, any chance of this being digitally fixed on the 4K BD?

Yes, that's the one. Thank you. Also, thank you also for the info about the pics. I still can't believe that after all these years of Movie theaters, VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and Blu-ray, I had never noticed the guy. The problem is that now I can't stop seeing him :wah:.

But aren’t they working on the 4K version now? Must be just a cheap upscale.
Huh? No, there is a 4K remaster of the theatrical coming next month.

The 4K director's cut is a separate project.

So far from being cheap, Paramount seems to have actually paid out to do the job properly.

His shiny jacket is "futuristic" enough that I would just go with some in-universe explanation that handwaves him away as a character in the scene.

For 4K releases, if the source is film then chances are it's going to be full 4K. Modern movies with CGI tend to be rendered at 2K because, even with today's technology, to render all that CGI in native 4K is prohibitive, especially if they have to change light sources or other objects to re-render due to a mistake, et cetera. But a lot of films from the 90s and earlier have benefited, and the old Star Wars movies (not the prequels!) look incredible.

Here's a fun article of titles released:
