Neil Gaiman's Sandman is a classic

The Boys and Preacher by Garth Ennis are great if you want ultra violent comics that turn the superhero motif on its head.

There are some good crossovers that will introduce you to the whole Marvel Universe: Secret Wars, Infinity Gauntlet, World War Hulk

Some personal favorites: Justice League vs. Avengers mini-series; the third series of Avengers by Kurt Busiek; the Winter Soldier with Captain America.

^Ya! anything by ennis is pretty good. Great to briliant if your just a little bit ''OFF'' (me) if you know what I mean, in fact has anybody here but me read Ennis's latest Horror series from ''AVATAR PRESS'' called the''CROSSED''? Trust me it is ''NOT'' for the faint of heart! I've only read issue's 0,1, And I don't know if I want to continue or not!

For pure fun adventure comics, check out Atomic Robo. It's in two trades right now. Hellboy and BPRD are good reads, too.

Here's a funny bit from the first trade, where Carl Sagan convinces Robo to go along with the Viking lander. In addition to Carl Sagan, the issue has a cameo by Stephen Hawking. Robo's supposedly got a longstanding rivalry with the latter.

Pal, I remember when I first started buying comic books, it was the Marvel Transformers (G1) series. They were 0.75 cents, then buck, buck-25, buck-50, buck-75, finally Buck Rodgers kid!

So, the$e day$, you're looking, minimum $42.00 a year on comic books, assuming you'd be collecting just 1 series.

Many are still 2.99, though cost is rising (in large part because, thanks to the current recession, advertising revenue has collapsed). Also, trades, which is what is mainly being discussed here, are cheaper.

Or you could just pirate them.

In a couple of years, we'll probably see mass digital media distribution (which I'm not really looking forward to; reading stuff on a screen bugs me).

Y'know, outside of some Hellboy and some of my wife's Star wars comics, I haven't really been motivated to look at anything new since Edlund ended his Tick run....until I saw that.
That looks fun.

As an Ennis fanatic I've wanted to read this for so long.

I admit I haven't read The Goon in a while, I need to catch up. I wonder if they'll put the Chinatown stuff in the movie.

I imagine it'll be in a sequel, if it gets one. It was hinted about in the book for long enough for it to feel like a payoff when it came around. But I guess you never know.

I wonder if the humor will really translate to a mainstream audience, though. Of all the books I've imagined getting a movie deal, The Goon's never really been one of them.

On the flip-side, Atomic Robo seems destined for it. I could see the movie having a Rocketeer-ish vibe in live action, though a CG flick would probably work better.

I can't imagine it doing really well at the Box office. It does seem to be a niche comic. But I still want to see it.
