Comic Book Collecting.

Depends on what you mean by collecting. I know there are some who collect for collecting sake, rather than enjoying the material.

Me, I get comics for the entertainment. Or atleast I try to. While I wouldn't at all say I'm new to the medium, I've only really just started buying them. After trying out some superhero comics, I realised they just aren't for me. Too much focus on events, too little consistent characterisation (or any), too many character important crossovers and too many poor attempts to drive the readership up.

On top of that, there's the trouble knowing which comic is an alternate universe, given there are multiple series using the same group of characters set in the same universe, but for some reason are different or set in a different time period.

As such, outside of two superhero comics, I'm mostly about licensed works (which seem to be consistently better written, from the ones I've read).

have you tried trade paperbacks like immortal ironfist, silver surfer requiem, or dark knight returns?

Limited to mostly Japanese manga. Though I do have some X-men and Star Wars GNs.

I have very little of Japanese manga. I have a Robotech mang book from years ago. It was actually just a hodge podge of photos from the cartoon.

Like 3/4 of it was acquired at the fire sale of a big bookstore chain that went out of business about 3 years ago and I really went overboard since everything was so insanely cheap. There's a lot of things in it I still haven't read yet... :scream:

Dang that's quite a list. Well at least if you ever get bored you have plenty to read.

After the fire, and I had no power for a week, I tried reading all my old comics by candle light, that I had been collecting since childhood, and they were all pretty shite.

True, there are at least 15 series from there I can read on a rainy day. I've been trying to pick away at the pile in between the novels I read regularly and all the shows I watch, but nothing ever seems to get done on the backlog front...

I have a few comics that I bought a while ago but haven't yet read. They are late silver and bronze age(Iron Man, The Eternals). Will probably save them for when I am bored.

No time to read the thread tonight, but I just wanna jump in with a comment on collecting - don't bother.

I had 21 long boxes with 50 years worth of comics in them. Maybe 9,000 issues. All those years people told me how valuable my collection would be some day. At 58, I simultaneously got tired of collecting, and needed the room that 21 long boxes took up. I contacted a few comic shops and collectors. I wanted to sell the whole collection at once, and everyone was up front that I wouldn't get as much as if I sold individual titles, or one at a time. Well, I had no care to do that, I just wanted them gone.

$1,000. :borg:

I'm pretty disgusted.

If you had comics from the early 60s and 70s in those boxes and sold them for a $1000 the buyer got a deal. There were plenty of Key issues during those 2 decades and you could have made a lot of money. Did you go through them before you sold to check on key comics?

That's really your own fault. If you didn't care to sell them individually then you shouldn't be disgusted that you only got $1000 for the lot.

At this moment I'm "only" collecting Disney comics (in finnish). And at them just concentrating on completing couple of series with first editions. Mainly pocket books.

I do still buy weekly comics, but stopped actively collecting them. They are all available digitally so market for older paper versions has pretty much gone except for some collectors.

Digital >>>>>>>>Paper

One fried hard drive and you've lost the lot.

I've been Schroedingering it for a couple years now.

My dvd burner clapped out without expressing any obvious signs of disharmony, so it took me about 6 months to notice that some (most?) of the dvds I'd been burning were %20 code salad.

So maybe I have a lot less digital comics than I think I do, and maybe I don't.

I don't have to strive to replace anything, until I know for sure, which I have no plans on doing.

Not true. Most of the sites keep all of the stuff you buy on your account online, even if you don't download them. I have 99 comics on my account right now on my Comixology account, but the only one I actually have downloaded to my tablet is Fantastic Four: World's Greatest.
Of the 99 comics, I only paid for 30 of them.

I haven't really tried the digitals JD. I collect few new comics these days. I have been wanting to get the new Secret Wars books. They look pretty good. Maybe I will check them out digitally depending on the cost.
