Comfort Film

Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. It may be a harrowing tale of a necrophiliac, voyeuristic romance but.. I've probably seen it hundreds of times.

I'll go for Brian DePalma's remake, OBSESSION (1976). This film, for DePalma, is uncharacteristically comforting.

I much prefer his other remake of Vertigo, Body Double.

Agreed. Obsession, though a good film, skews just a little too closely to Vertigo in pretty much every department for me to really see it on its own merits. Body Double takes Vertigo and Rear Window (with a dollop of Dial M for Murder) and puts it in a blender along with a healthy dose of 80s excess, cheesiness and camp that comes out as one deliciously ridiculous smoothie.

(As you can tell by my Body Double avatar featuring one of the most beautifully ridiculous moments in the film.)

Lately, my comfort films seem to boil down to these three:

  • Love Actually
  • The Right Stuff
  • Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
I know, with that last one, I really have a weird definition of comfort. :p

The Mummy (90s version). It's not my favorite film of all time (FOTR, Raiders, ESB, Shawshank, all vie for that). But if there's a film I want to waste an afternoon with, perhaps nap while watching, perhaps just enjoy for its sheer entertainment and fun ... it's The Mummy. Followed closely by Muppet Treasure Island and the first Pirates of the Caribbean film.

I always knew you were a man of taste and discernment; Muppet Treasure Island is on my top ten list also.

The End of Evangelion. Knew next to nothing what was happening some years ago but it felt very meaningful. Watched a decent quality rip for the first time just now. There haven't been first-hand dvd's with english subs for many years. In-universe, was there any reason at all to leave tang?

Dammit, now I'm going to have to watch it again!

Not to mention, this is one instance where we can honestly say Hans Zimmer's score is iconic (not to mention the songs from Barry Mann). ;)

Muppets?

I saw The Muppet Movie when I was 13. I must be a Geek, because I say with pride that I still know all the lyrics to the songs. I'm about to hit 50, mind you.

Ba-dum da dum-a-la-dum-dum-dum, ba dum da dum-ba-dum-da! Da dum da dum-a-lee-dum-dum dum, da dum da dum-a dum-da...

Also: Ach du LIEBER Volkswagen car/Saur braten viener schnitzel/Und a vunder bar!

I do wish they'd done more literary adaptations, as I think it's a great format for 'em; not sure what I'd have chosen as the next source, though... The Book of Exodus? The labors of Hercules? The Three Musketeers? Infinite Jest?

It's silly, but my go-to comfort films are anything that makes me laugh. Spaceballs is a good one...no matter what kind of foul mood I'm in, I'm sure to laugh my ass off and forget everything. Ditto with Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Anchorman, and Blazing Saddles.

Or if I want to be a sobbing mess, Steel Magnolias. A weird form of comfort, I know, but I love those ladies in the film.

Actually, I find my tastes for a comfort Hitchcock film lean towards North By Northwest
Oh yes, North by Northwest and To Catch a Thief
Totally. Something about Cary Grant & Hitch makes me sit back & settle in. Been meaning to see Suspicion for that reason. Just haven't gotten around to it

Something about Jimmy Stewart & Hitch makes me sit up & be tense, Rear Window, Vertigo. Still brilliant, just not very comforting, as comfort films go. lol

"Shadow of a Doubt" is kinda cozy, in a twisted way. It's very rewatchable, although you'll end with the "Merry Widow Waltz" stuck in your heard afterwards!
