comedy in early TNG ?

I think as the cast grew more comfortable over the years, the humor stemmed from small moments, whether a glance, which is all about performance, or off-the-cuff comment snuck in by the writers. Reactions from Frakes and Dorn are always my favorite, such as the epilogue to 5th season's "Conundrum" when Riker meets up with Ro and Troi in Ten Forward.

Yeah, leave it to wide audience American TV to make such a fuss over casual sex...

Agreed, entirely. In rewatching the show on the Blu-Rays, it's even more apparent with Worf. He has so many great moments like this through the series.

I also re-watched The Royale the other day and it's still one of my cheesy, old-school Star Trek favorites. "When the train comes in, everyone rides!"

"Baby needs a new pair of shoes." : It's funny, Danny DeVito has that exact same line in "Mars Attacks!".

Data and the finger trap is a good comedy moment.

True. I actually like the 'early babbling Data' schtick from the first couple seasons a lot. Spiner has got great comic timing, so it would have been a shame for them not to make use of that.

Was there a fuss? Seemed like a pretty low-key moment to me.

In "The Neutral Zone", Sonny points at Data and says "What is that?" Data turns around to see what he's pointing at. Spiner does a subtle "mechanical" turn, first with his head, then the body.

Let me be blunt. Why would Riker need to "talk" to "counselor Troi" because he stuck his biscuit into Ro's oven? That seems kinda stupid to me.

Because he knows she and Ro have been comparing notes. That's how it plays anyway.

That's how I took it too. It's funny because the girls have been talking about him.

Speaking of Ro & Riker (I know it's not early season humour, but..) I found the scenes between those two in The Next Phase very funny. "I guess I'll never find out what you were going to say about me now..." :rommie:

If so then it's none of his business, at any rate the least he knows about it the better off he'll be.

What I find stupid is Troi talking about psychology sessions.

She did say "my office", not ten forward or you know where my quarters are or anything of the sort.

What in hell would he need to go to her office for?

It was her way of saying "Forget about that imzadi business, buster. From now on, our relationship is strictly on a professional level."

Correct me if I am wrong but Ro was far from being the first woman, Riker played "hide the salami" with, since the beginning of the series.

That's not the point. With Ro, it was right under Troi's nose. I don't know what the status of their on-again, off-again relationship was at that time, but Troi was just having fun reading his emotions and watching him squirm.

They were all under Troi's nose. First season, he became the toyboy of that woman in that matriarchal society, then (I am just listing off the top of my head I may be missing many) the woman that wanted him to wash her feet, then the woman that was a killing machine, the woman he had sex with in First Contact (the episode), the woman from the androgynous society, Beverly,... And Ro is the first time, that upsets Troi? I can't believe that.

It didn't upset her. I think you have totally misread that scene.

It was played for laughs.

It wasn't funny. It made me wonder what Riker was so confused about. I mean, so he slept with a woman. So? Why didn't Troi play that little number of hers when he slept with any of the dozen of other women? That seems so artificial. It's like the whole thing was written by some pimply faced adolescent.

This.

Too, it was also all during their little escapade trying to retrieve their memories, and during which Riker and Troi still on a subcoscnious level recognized that they two shared a very special connection, that might have led to them rekindling their romance had Ro not been there too. It's not so much that it all happened "under Troi's nose" as it was that Troi's not stupid. She knows Riker was dillydallying with her and Ro at the same time and now that he'd bedded Ro, the same was not going to happen (as easily, if at all) with her. It wasn't like she felt betrayed or slighted; she knew Riker had a way with the ladies and was teasing him. I don't know how you can misread that if you pay attention to their relationship through the series, but whatev.

Even under that logic, it seems quite stupid of Troi to not realize that of all the times that Riker had casual sex with a woman this was the only time, well if we don't count Beverly that is, when he had an excuse for forgetting about this imzadi business, for all he knew, they were only friends (with or without benefits) and that's that.
