Collision Course and Destiny

What really stinks is that less than a year ago, and definitely before then, the books were in great supply here. Literally overnight at my local Borders Star Trek went from a full four foot section (four shelves) to one shelf between the Star Wars and Marvel universe books. I'm hopeful that the new Barnes and Nobles that just opened in our mall will be better (fat chance though right?).

I've said before, bookshops increased the space dedicated to ST books to coincide with increased demand following TMP, ST IV, about the midpoint of TNG's TV run, and again after "First Contact". During quieter times, many shops downsize again.

I expect that many shops will expand their ST section again next May.
Is the expansion more likely to be before or after the movie? I would think it would be before, myself.

The Barnes and Noble bookstore near me used to have a HUGE section of Star Trek books. Its down to about two shelves. They used to have about two book cases. The Walden books store that used to be at the mall used to be the same way.

Yeah. I remember the glory days of going into Barnes and Nobles and drooling over all the Tech manuals, encys, companion and other books. Then I'd drool even more at all the titles I didn't own. Now I walk in and look only to see I own all of what they are selling.

Well, before I self-edited, I attempted to speculate March, then April, then early 2009, and figured someone would question the date no matter what I chose. Isn't the "Crucible" Hardcover Omnibus slated for May? Bookstores probably won't stock the individual "Countdown" comics, but only the trade omnibus. Isn't that April? I assume with all the secrecy a novelization won't turn up till the beginning of May.

I'm sure it'll vary from chain to chain, and shop to shop, and will also reflect the biases of various managers. As it always has.

My copy from Amazon arrived yesterday, and I'm trying really hard to pace myself. I want to read the entire thing in one sitting but I'm going to try to make it last a few days.
Why?

Well if I read the entire novel in a day, then I'd be itching to read book 3 right away. At least dragging it out over the course of 4 or 5 days gives me time to enjoy the book and it doesn't feel so rushed.

The novelizations for the last four movies had hard street dates of the movie's release date. I'd expect the novelization for the new film to likewise have a hard street date for the film's release.

I'm surprised, most of the time I see movie novelisations at Wal-Mart and the books weeks before the movie even comes out. But I guess with something this top secret they might wait longer.

The Border and Barnes and Noble here in Augusta only carry one shelf each of Star Trek books. ONE SHELF! And when they get the new ones its only about 5 at a time. I gave up trying to shop for Trek books there anymore. Amazon Prime all the way. And I keep getting stuff early. I'm not gonna complain of course, its great. I got both Destiny books at the end of last month about three days apart. And my shipping e-mail indicates book 3 should be here about Monday/Tuesday.
Why not do an online reserve? Then you could go into the shop and the book would be waiting for you.

I try that too... it never works. :(

Start making the books with alternating sections of boring and interesting maybe...

You still paid $5.99 too much for Collision Course.

You know, I can't agree with this. Admittedly, I read this hardcover while on vacation, so I was relaxed and in the mood to enjoy it. Knowing my opinions of Shatnerverse instalments have been quite varied, and after reading some very negative reviews of this one, I expected the worst.

While I have reservations about some of Shatner's choices, it's a fun, fast read.

BTW, the MMPB version still carries the promotion line for a future Volume 2, so I guess Shatner's highly-publicised complaining that the second book might not happen because Pocket failed to market the first one may be all hot air and bluster. If sales of the hardcover were dismal, I'm sure that line would have disappeared from the MMPB.

Whats funny about this is that the large Chapters in my town, with its... I dunno, maybe 2 or 3 so rows of books (sometimes they're mixed with SW, so its hard to tell)... still rarely gets 5 copies of anything that I've seen!! Maybe... I've had to get books there since... Gateways? Or before that... maybe once or twice they've gotten more than 4 of anything. (The fact they look like they've been attacked by beavers aside).

I just read an interview yesterday where Shatner mentiones that there won't be anymore books.

UGO: Well, the fans refer to that as the Shatnerverse. I don't know if you're familiar with that term.
WS:
Yeah, the Shatnerverse has probably come to an end, but that's my Shatnerverse.

So what's the deal with this? Can we get any offical word? Another book was planned. Has any work started on that? Will it go ahead?

I'm reading CC at the moment and am enjoying it but its bloody annoying in two places where I've seen dates and they have been wrong. On both occasions it said 23XX when I'm sure they should have been 22XX.
