College Hockey Fans?

Do we have any fans of the glorious sport of ice hockey at the college level?

If so, speak up, and tell us who you follow/root for, and what you think...

I was introduced to this insanity as a lowly freshman in the U of Wisconsin Marching Band when I was ordered at rehearsal by several upperclassmen to play in the hockey band for the home opener. I didn't miss many games during my time in the Band, and 13 years later (and a shitty 1-6-1 start to this year's season), I'm still a rabid Wisconsin Hockey fan.

My two-year-old daughter even watches it with me at home, and we're planning to take her to a game this season (I've even been teaching her how to pound on the glass in case we get lucky with seats).

Anybody else a fan? Even you followers of Minnesota are welcome to participate in the thread. ;)

As a student at RPI (Rensselaer) it is required I be a hockey fan and root for our Engineers. Its our only DI sport, so its a pretty big deal here, and I have season tickets. Unfortunately, weve been off to an extremely slow start.:(

I unfortunately, barely have time to keep up with the NHL and any minor league team I am interested in. Not that college sports teams are THAT big here. Our college's hockey team played the Chinese national team and i was one of the few people who even knew aobut it.

It's kind of depressing really.

In high school I went to University of Denver games in the old fieldhouse. That was a wild building.

I've been to the Frozen Four every year since 2001, so I guess you could say I qualify.

I know that one of our authors in Trek Lit is a die hard North Dakota fan who also makes the pilgrimage to the Frozen Four annually.

I love the Wisconsin crowd yelling "that's debatable" after the announcer announces "both teams at even strength" following the expiration of a penalty; many crowds yelling "how much time's left?", followed by the announcer saying "1 minute remaining in the period" and then "thank you!".

Good times.

"That's debatable" followed by Band members shouting random things that rhyme with "debatable" is done at UW following any announcement about the "strength" of the visiting hockey team, as well as following the "one minute" remark at hockey and basketball.

The Kohl Center gets to be a wild place when the Badgers score and the crown erupts with the "Sieve!" cheer, which the Band tends to transplant over to basketball (missed free throws) and football (interceptions).

The CIS is tragically underappreciated if you ask me.

Yeah, I completely agree on that. Especially knowing how hard some of these people work.

I'm the sports editor at my university's newspaper, and it just kills me how little people pay attention to most of our athletes compared to how much time they put into their sports. The only (moderate) exceptions are our men's basketball and football teams.

Yeah, I hear nothing about our sports. It was like the amount people cared about highschool sports in comparison to college sports should be switched around. At times throughout highschool I just wishes some of the people would shut up sometimes...and now I wonder if athletes in the school system even exist :(

^ There are at least a few that have broken through. The Queen's Golden Gaels and Laval Rouge et Or both have football teams that tend to be quite popular, and the Carleton Ravens (ugh) have managed to put together a fairly popular men's basketball team. I don't know of any reasonably popular CIS hockey teams, though, which is just baffling to me.

And unfortunately, these are exceptions rather than rules.

I prefer college hockey to the NHL.

Growing up in Minnesota I was a devout Gopher fan.

Gophers fan here as well. I haven't been to see the Gophers play in ages, but after the North Stars left (and before the Wild), I used to go quite a bit. I even went on road trips to watch them when they played North Dakota (it was always a hoot there). In some ways, I still prefer college hockey, but I don't follow it like I did when I was in school.
