Cold Equations: Speculations and Suppositions

David Mack has written up a blog entry about his new Next Generation trilogy due out towards the end of the year.

From the bare bones information he's given, what do you suppose will happen?

BECAUSE SAID STORIES ARE ONLY A THIRD WRITTEN, PLEASE DON'T WRITE STORY IDEAS AND THE LIKE BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE BAD.
very cool he may not be trying to top destiny but by the sound of this trilogy he just especially with the return of a certin some one. now will this trilogy be set before or after david george's Typhon pact dueology?

Mack said in his blog that it takes place in early 2384, so if my mental chronology is correct that would place it after Paths of Disharmony and The Struggle Within, the latest two TP books. Since it jumps ahead so much farther than them (I think they're both in 2382, but I'm not positive) it'll probably be after Plagues of Night and Raise the Dawn too.

The named characters will choose NOT to sacrifice the few; magically, it turns out that this decision also allows the many to survive.

You should read that short story.

I have.
There's a big difference between Tom Godwin's story themes and D Mack's trek lit; merely having the same name is justified by the presence of the ethical dillemas.

Dunno, for me the name does not imply dilemma as much as having one's hands forced by circumstance, so that's the expectation that invoking it sets up for me. We shall see how it measures up in the end.

Yeah, PoD and TSW are the last two tales in 2382, with Indistinguishable from Magic leading off 2383. My understanding is that DRGIII's duology is in '83, but I'm not certain.

We are creeping ever closer to 2387 and the Hobus supernova. With an 18 month lead time for novels there needs to be an editorial decision made fairly soon about events leading up to it and whether to incorporate / how to set up Countdown...

They were deliberately on the fence at the time of the first four Typhon Pact novels. Picard was offered an Ambassadorship ad Spock became a legal resident of Romulus when "Countdown" established.

I have a sad feeling the supernova's gonna be skipped over, referenced in passing instead of featured. I'd like to be proven wrong, though.

All that said, IIRC, the novels of the early 2000's spent a loooong time in 2378. Voyager and New Frontier are still in 2381. There's no real reason why the books have to reach 2387 any time soon.

It always amazes me how much people seem to think they know about what will happen in a novel when all we've been given is a title and a very brief description. We haven't even gotten the final official descriptions for the book and some people seem to think they know exactly what's going to happen.

Data will return thanks to the power of Hope, and then when all seems lost against the sentient machine-thingy, Q will appear, and him and Data will perform the Dragonball Z Fusion technique, becoming Qata, and they'll defeat the enemy with Super Kamehameha Wave attack (after an inspiring speech from Picard).

See? Who wouldn't get that from the brief description?

It always amazes me how little some people seem to know about star trek's tropes despite, presumably, having watched/read a lot of it.

Or maybe some of us are just optimistic and trust David Mack not to give us the same shit we've gotten a million times.

^I think he's suggesting that the novels could portray the supernova in a different way, tell a different story about it, just as Federation and First Contact told different stories about Zefram Cochrane's development of warp drive, or just as Peter David, Howard Weinstein, Diane Carey, Julia Ecklar, Shatner & the Reeves-Stevenses, and Kurtzman & Orci have told different and incompatible stories about Kirk's Academy years.

Even though I'm one of the few people who liked Countdown, I would still love to see what the novel authors would come up with as a lead up to the JJAbrams movie.

so would I liked countdown. and would love to see more of the new universe other than the starfleet academy series and the new ongoing comic book series.

now here's a question for you since the rise of the typhon pact do you think they would make contact with the dominon for a treaty of some kind?

I don't understand, do you mean the Typhon Pact (of whom a member was briefly part of the Dominion) or the Federation itself, extending an olive branch?
