Coffe cups on Squire of Gothos & other stuff

voggmo

Commodore
Was this the only episode where they all had a cup on the bridge? Clipboards appeared here & seemed to dissapear pretty quickly.

The Geology crewmember didn't last long either. The landing party was also unusual on this episode as well.

Just think, some idiot driving down the road with a cup of coffee sued the shit out of McDonalds. That was only in a car. Imagine the danger of spilling a cup of hot coffee on your crotch while travelling at warp speed!

The real reason McDonalds was sued...it wasn't frivolous.

"McDonalds was serving coffee at 190 degrees [20-40 degrees hotter than industry standards]. At that temperature, it will cause third degree burns, sufficient to require skin grafting or debridement and generally hospitalization, in under seven seconds. At the time of this incident, McDonalds had already been served with a formal warning from the Shriner Burn Institute, which they ignored. They had also had over 700 previous injuries or complaints."

"The [87 year old] plaintiff spilled coffee on herself and as a result, endured third-degree open burns on six percent of her body. She required eight days of hospitalization, including skin grafts and debridement treatment."

At warp speed, McDonalds' coffee would be like having a Horta sit on your lap.

They never do... But we did get a geologist again in "That Which Survives", another episode that featured an "impossible" planet. And interestingly enough, no other TOS episode had our heroes running into a planet that confounded them by its geology - so the absence of specialists in that field is quite logical. We got mention of further geologists Rawlins and Carstairs in "The Ultimate Computer", though.

The landing party was also unusual on this episode as well.

That's what you get when you let Spock decide. Or a computer.

How about the coffee cup on the dashboard of the Galileo in Metamorphosis? I always thought that was incredibly dumb.

Kirk, bumping the coffee cup as he checks his automatic scanner: "That's odd. I've never...YOWWWWEEE!!!!"

I mean, even in the late 60's, who would put a cup of hot coffee on the dash of their car as they were driving down the road?

^^^ Hardly analogous...are there bumps in the road in space?
Ummm, have you seen "Star Trek?" The show where things explode on the bridge with people (and chairs!) getting tossed about? You think a coffee cup is gonna stay in one place?

It was a great way for Scotty to "have one" while on duty. Nobody noticed but in "Wink of an Eye" his had a little whipped cream on top. Scotty carried on the tradtion of Clansman coffee. ;)
