Cobra Kai - The Karate Kid Saga Continues

You know it just occurred to me but Hilary Swank will also likely have something to do within the next two parts of the show. I bet they bring her back. I never saw that movie though so I am not even sure what her character was about.
She was the Next Karate Kid, of course! ;)

Yeah, I've seen posts out there of lots of folks who have speculated that she might return for the final season. IMDB has an article (dated 7/18/2024, so pretty recent) that says this (emphasis mine):
Although nothing has been said to confirm yet, the news came from Macchio who hinted that someone could be making a cameo in the upcoming episodes of the series. While he didn’t list names, his response was enough to let know that fans might get to see some other characters from the original film series who couldn’t appear. Like Hilary Swank’s Julie Pierce.
If not her, then who else? And, I mean, why not? They've brought back literally everyone else that was ever in a KK movie (the ones who are still alive, anyway).

I just kind of wished the upcoming movie with Laruso & Mr. Han had more of the KK/CK legacy actors. Johnny and Courtney at the very least.

I assumed Swank would at least cameo the moment they introduced the name Kesuke.
Though the name swap retcon doesn't make complete sense, it seems like the best time to introduce the notion would be when you're about to have someone from that movie appear.

Guys, don't get my hopes up for Swank returning. I literally wait for it to happen each episode.

I just binged the first 5 episodes of this final season..... i am sure there are many who thought it was hokey, but it felt "good" to me.... kids are clearly maturing -- and seeing the positive fruits of that. And we are seeing how Johnny Lawrence actually has been having legitimate POStiVE influence on kids (and a certain adult ;) ). These episodes zoomed by really quick and felt like a lot of punch.

I am a tad disappointed who we have apart of the bad guy team now, but i guess that's the only way to fill that slot without introducing yet another new character.

Now did we actually have a closing of one character's arc, with that person not going to Spain? (Are there ANY European countries that do NOT have an extradition treaty with the US????)

Spoilers for season 6.

So....I watched it and... The first 5 episodes don't really go anywhere. Lot of college talk stuff and everyone is pals again for the most part.

I mean, there's a fight between Johnny and Chozen that disappointingly doesn't happen. There's a fight between Barnes and Johnny that is way too short with little build up to it and it's pretty much over just like that. Chozen and Barnes disappear for the last episode. Those would have been way bigger events in earlier seasons...

I was surprised where episode 5 ends. I didn't think they'd be getting to the tournament storyline so soon. So assuming the next 5 episodes in November is the tournament then would anyone want to guess the plot for the last 5 episodes?

It felt like build up to me to be honest. Putting pieces into place.

With Tory going back to Cobra Kai, in part due to the grief over her moms passing, Kreese trying to prove he's not weak, Johnny wanting to branch out/disagreeing with Daniel or Mr. Miagi. It all feels like it's leading towards more.

It feels cohesive to me.

Guesses...

Tory has to find out and realize that she's not alone. That people care about her.

Kreese needs to get over his own ego.

Johnny was right about Mr. Miagi. Daniel needs to accept the fact that he was human. He can still appreciate him, despite his flaws/faults.

I'm sorry, as fun as it was when the show started and as campy good it was for several seasons this show has really run its course and overstayed its welcome. I sort of tolerated that they made Chozen a good guy, gotten used to the Johnny 80s obsession cringe and overall mediocre acting but i can't anymore. The show had a perfect ending last season - they went through all the movie villains ( we'll disregard Next KK for now), dealt with them in one way or the other and it should have ended there. Why they did this season at all i can't understand other than just keeping busy and making a few bucks off the people still watching.

I'm out, season 5 finale is the inofficial show finale for me.

You have come this far you might as well ride out what I assume will be 10 episodes. Most of them not even being 30 minutes long. I do agree the show has hit a wall but it's still good enough IMO to keep with it till the end. My guess this final few episodes will even be pretty good because it will be all about bringing closure to the show. I would be shocked if the show doesn't end with more more, final karate fight between Johnny and Daniel.

I would not be surprised if they did that. Or at least did tease the movie in some fashion. Turns out Jackie Chan's character use to work on Mr Miyagi's cars one summer when he was younger and visiting America. He stopped by to see the place again while visiting the states to visit Jaden Smith's character. Wouldn't you know it just happened to be when Kreese and his students happen to also show up and then a Karate fight breaks out and Jackie Chan can't help but to join in and help Daniel and his kids.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but more details about the new movie have come to surface. I've considered starting a new thread to avoid delving into things about the series I don't want to get into yet as I haven't yet watched the latest season. Going to be called Karate Kid Legends and set in NYC. Seems they're aiming for May 2025, but that seems optimistic to me.

Gizmodo said:
What we learn from the trailer, or at least can try and discern, is that Mr. Han seemingly takes the lead between the two legacy characters. He speaks about tradition rooted in history mentioning both kung fu and karate. We see him and LaRusso meet, and LaRusso assumes he is looking for Mr. Miyagi. “I did not come looking for Mr. Miyagi,” Han says. “I came looking for you.”

This suggests that even though the two were technically worlds apart, that Mr Han was well-aware of who Mr Miyagi was during the events of his movie. Wish we could see the trailer, but I'm assuming it will appear online soon.

WHy do you say optimistic? Like too early?

Would it be fair to assume that part 3 of season 6 would have SOME kind of connection to the movie... even if it's one (or more) of the final scenes? If so, I would think they would want to milk the heck out of the Netflix release, to pump excitement for the movie. But with the potnetial release sandwiched between Thunderbolts and misison Impossible, that might be a bad move.
If they could get it released in Mid APril (with relatively little competition), part 3 could be the momentum it needs to suceed, maybe even be # 1 for a couple of weeks.

Yeah, in my mind, being that the rest of the final season of Cobra Kai hasn't released yet, it feels very optimistic to be saying it will release in May 2025. It will almost surely be delayed.

Being that both production teams are involved, it's certainly possible. The Cobra Kai production team were asked to help out to make sure there was consistency and continuity. But like with anything, we don't really know for sure the extent of what that means.

The principal photography of the film was finished this past June.... so i don't know...seems like enough time to release it.

Now, they have NOT specified a release date for part 3...i wonder if they are waiting for when part 2 is released to announce it then.

Tying the movie release to season 3 i think can give it the hype it needs to succeed....the question is..what time is the best...like just a week before, a month....?

Well, I wasn't aware that part of it was done, but there could still be delays with the other stuff.

I have watched the series together with friends, by having an online watch-party, and we've decided to wait until all parts are released before we start watching it. I thought they had just released part 2.

But that being said, I think it'd be fair for them to release the movie a month from part 3's release. Gives enough time for people to catch up and allows them to prepare a marketing blitz to the lead up of the movie. Too soon, and you'd be potentially cannibalizing views from the series to favor the movie. They have to do this carefully.

I already have friends elsewhere who feel there's no need for a new movie, or that it couldn't possibly do well without Johnny Lawrence, but to that I say, Cobra Kai has always been an ensemble show, and while it has his dojo's name in the title of the show, the show has given his character his time in the sun. The new movie will possibly open up a new era and possibilities for new spinoffs.

My prediction (based on nothing!) is that the movie will have very little to do with Cobra Kai, if anything at all. I'm betting (so far) that the coordination is simply so that Daniel doesn't say or do something that blatantly contradicts material from CK.

I could be wrong, but there's no money involved so who cares? ;)

Exactly my thoughts. It's said to be set in a different location on the east-coast, rumoured to be NYC, so that in itself kind of removes a lot of Cobra Kai's aspects or cameos from happening. I could perhaps see Mr Han (Jackie Chan) coming to Daniel for help at the end of the season leading off directly into the movie, then having Daniel putting Johnny in charge of Miyagi-do while he's away to train a new student on the east-coast.
