In a perfect world that is true, but since this is their final season (and assuming the franchise will be done at that point), they may not actually care if they piss off a large block of the fanbase and go balls-out into the Twighlight Zone.
I mean, shit, look at the Sopranos ending. That thing will live forever in infamy as probably one of the absolute worst series endings in all of TV history. That's some shit right there... NuBSG also applies, but to a vastly lesser extent. They actually managed to have a traditional ending, albeit grossly unsatisfying for pretty much everyone. However, RDM (or maybe it was David Eick, I can't remember) went on record saying how much he LOVED the Sopranos ending and would have wanted a similar thing for NuBSG, but I think he also said that he didn't want the death threats that David Chase got for doing that, so he opted for what we ultimately saw.
A bit of a digression, admittedly, but it is topical, and there is a precedent.
