Co-Worker Getting Into Lost

Co-Worker told me today that he is going to start watch Lost as, apparently, it is now available through Netflix's on demand service.

In the span of a couple of the days he had watched through about half of the first season and he was talking about it today about how he "could see why the show was so popular" and was talking about all of the "mysteries" going on around everything.

Oddly, he didn't talk about the emotional journeys the characters are on, he was asking me some simple questions -not wanting spoilers- on things. Only thing I had the heart to tell him was that the "love triangle" between Kate, Jack and Sawyer was pretty much a series-long deal.

But, sigh. This what gets me about this show it starts off so good and intriguing in these respects and then by the fifth season it all pretty much implodes culminating into the whole thing being a giant cock-tease into something that provides no meaningful answers or resolution to any of the "mysteries" presented during the entire series. The finale was good in a "character wrap-up/arc" sort of way but considering the seasons and seasons of intrigue and mystery building up before it there was much left to be desired.

As much as I loved the finale and to a lesser degree with the last couple seasons, as I get some distance from the finale and I'm not so emotionally invested I tend to agree with you. The first three seasons were on track to be brilliant. Season 4 stumbled just a teeny bit I figured that was due to the shortened season and the writers strike.

Season 5 was still pretty good and I loved the LaFluer/Dharma storyline from the 60's. They could have given me as much as they wanted from that storyline and I'd have been happy.

Season 6 seemed to introduce some completely unnecessary elements (Dogan, the Temple, The Lighthouse, etc., etc and they really never gave us answers to quite a few things despite people's assertions that "If you look hard enough online or just think about it, almost all the answers are there."

One very small example of the type of thing that bugged me:
Desmond has a vision that if Charlie dies pushing those buttons, Claire and Aaron will definitely be saved by climbing on a chopper. This never occurs, never explained and is apparently just completely forgotten. It's a major plot point behind the death of a major character that is supposed to affect two other major characters and we get bupkiss for an answer?

I've got lots more like that, but, anyway......I digress. I loved the series and from a character development point of view, I really couldn't have asked for more than I got. I just wished they wouldn't have made the mysteries such a central theme during the first 4-5 seasons just to leave it at "any answer will just bring more questions" type of mentality which now just seems lazy .

I agree. It was a very intriguing story and a fun ride, but then so much was left hanging that it was ultimately unsatisfying.

What are you talking about? Season four was awesome! I consider it the best of the series. There pretty much zero filler and the season is structured brilliantly with the flashforwards. Its finale was also great.

Season five and six however were a step down. Season five was bogged down too much by the time travel and season six went too much into fantasy.

All 6 seasons of Lost were more or less awesome despite how my post may have made it seem. Season 4 for me just felt like a departure from the first 3 seasons. Probably because so much changed......Season 4 was the first season to incorporate people who weren't island bound and as such, it felt a bit "foreign" to me. It wasn't bad and I will agree that there were no filler episodes which Season 3 had quite a few.

Season 5 did suffer because of the early time travel stuff, I agree. However, the rest of the Season with Sawyer & crew being in the Dharma initiative was brilliant and more than made up for it in my mind.

Definitely agreed with your assessment about season 6.
