CNN declares PS3 "A Sinking Ship"

CNN has apparently decided that the PS3 is a "sinking ship" given the lackluster sales compared to the Xbox 360 and (especially) the Wii.

Sony's (SNE) PS3 is dying on the shelves.

Alone among the three major videogame consoles, sales of the PS3 are down about 19% from November 2007, according to the latest stats from the NPD Group. Sony was only able to sell 378,000 PS3s this November, compared to 466,000 last year.

And the problem for Sony isn't the recession, it's the PS3. Microsoft (MSFT) put up respectable numbers with its Xbox 360, selling 836,000 units vs 777,000 in November 2007. And Nintendo's (NTDOY) Wii continues to dominate the market, more than doubling sales from 981,000 to 2.04 million.

So why is the PS3 flopping so badly?

It's the most expensive console on the market, $150 - $200 more than its rivals. Even if you believe the video game industry is "recession-proof" (it isn't), a tanking economy makes consumers more price-conscious.

The PS3's big bonus is its ability to double as a Blu-Ray player. Too bad no one seems to care about hi-def DVDs. The differences between Blu-Ray and DVD are hard to see on a TV less than 50".

The PS3 just doesn't have any must-have titles exclusive to the console. "LittleBigPlanet" has generated decent buzz but isn't a game-changer, and neither is Sony's new virtual world "Home."
There's really only one option left for Sony to remain in the game: deep price cuts, and not just for people with good credit.

Tell yourself the PS3 has superior graphics if it makes you feel better, but a $400 console with a mediocre game library simply cannot compete against an Xbox 360 priced at $200 in this economy.

The story is here.

A co-worker (who also owns a PS3) was telling me about this article just this morning. I told him I figure it's not worth worrying about, certainly not worth arguing about it. It will either make it or not and I can't do anything about it (although articles like this will only serve to hurt future sales and not help, thanks CNN.)

If it is indeed "sinking" and they stop making games for it some day, it will still work as a blu-ray player which is why I bought it in the first place. In the mean time, it still has plenty of games to suit me.

The price point has been why I haven't bought it (I already own a 360 and a Wii).

If it dropped to $199-$249, I would definitely buy it though, to use mostly as a blu-ray player (it receives great reviews for its blu-ray capabilities).

same here. I have a wii, and am happy enough with it (not much into the fast-paced FPS games). I'd buy one for the blu-ray component, but not at that price point...

Final Fantasy XIII will come out sometime next year. Yes, I know it's going to be a 360 release as well, but that's more to the point. It will be the first real head-to-head example of performance and the fanboys will gobble it up. It will change everything.

A sinking ship?

Hasnt the PS3 outsold the 360 all year, and now with the November advantage they are basically neck and neck sales wise for the year? In America this is, I think everywhere else the PS3 is outselling the 360, as it should really.

I mean, end of the day all 3 next-gen console (if you count the wii) are great fun, to each their own. Obviously coming out more than a year later and being much more expensive the PS3 will have catching up to do... but its slowly doing it in most places.

Not really. Any performance or quality differences will be negligible except for people who are extremely sensitive about it, which is the minority. The general gaming population? Not so much.

As to the original article, the second point about Blu-Ray doesn't seem to hold true... while still not as large as the DVD market, the BR market continues to grow at a healthy rate.

I have an Xbox 360 and a PS3, but I use the PS3 way more since it is my DVD and Blu-Ray player. Also my Xbox 360 is kind of crash-prone.

I've never bought the argument that a single game can make or break a console, and Final Fantasy is no exception. It's not going to "save" the PS3 nor "destroy" the 360.

That said, I do think the CNN article is jumping the gun based on just one month's sales figures. The PS3 has a significant customer base, and it's not going anywhere. At some point they'll lower the price further and it will see a surge, just like Xbox has. I think a lot of Xbox owners in the U.S. are waiting for the price to go down a bit and then they'll buy a PS3 so they have both systems. I'm probably in that group myself.

While I agree that they are perhaps jumping the gun, the sales numbers are rather striking. Console sales for the past year from Gamasutra:

So, no, I don't think it's a sinking ship... but if I was Sony, I'd be a bit worried. And if I was Nintendo, I'd be swimming in a pool filled with $100 bills

Although i don't think the PS3 is anywhere near the doom and gloom in that article i have no qualms in admitting that Sony priced it out of the reach of most people, its a fantastic piece of kit but it was priced way too high, and still is....and this recession is not going to help matters.

I *might* have bought one just for use as a BluRay player, but unfortunately its remotes work via Bluetooth, which means it won't work with my preferred universal remote (a Logitech Harmony 880). :(

You can get an IR USB adapter that allows IR remotes, such as the Harmony, to control it. The only thing you can't do with such a setup is turn it on remotely.

It will no doubt still be around for a few more years, it will no doubt still sell well in Japan (because Japanese people are crazy and like games about fighting animals, high schoolers with super powers and dating sims ;) ), but I have serious reservations about whether or not it will outsell the 360 in NA or Europe before the end of it's lifetime (unless they extend its lifetime for years and years).

There's nothing terrible about the PS3, it's just a decidedly average console with an above average price competing with what amounts to a low-priced toy everyone and their dog seems to want just to play virtual bowling and a low-priced console that has the dedicated gaming market sewn up.

Notice how many times I used the word "price"? PS3 owners point out that to get all the features the PS3 has (wireless, free online gaming, etc.) you can end up paying just as much or more with the 360 (and that's true). However, they ignore the fact that most 360s are cheaper Arcade or 20GB models (and now cheaper 60GB models) and that the average 360 (and PS3) owner does not play games online.

If all MS sold was the Elite, they might be in trouble. It would be like Honda only offering one version of the Accord, the loaded V6 model. Sony probably would have been wise to do something similar with the PS3.

I don't understand The Wii, a system with very few good games(or rather just games period), outsells the 360 which has the best and most games.

It's a new market. I'm sure there are a lot of Wii owners who are content with Wii Fit and Wii Sports and have no desire to pick up Madden or Call of Duty.

Though with the Gamecube and now the Wii, Nintendo has been a generation behind console-wise compared to the Xbox and PS. I wonder if they'll continue to be like this.

The Wii is cheap. I imagine that's the main reason so many system has been bought since it sure as hell isn't for the games or the graphics.

Speaking as a Wii and PS3 owner I will say that the Wii has plenty of good games. Super Paper Mario is amazing, Mario Galaxy is good, Mario Kart, that Wario mini game thing, Zelda, Metroid, etc. It's being sold because it is cheap and there are good games for it.

The PS3 is just too expensive. Now, it IS worth it for what you get, but I only found that out after I got one as a gift. I never would have known, and I would have continued to wait for the price to drop.
