Cloverfield success, good for Star Trek XI???

Here is what I mean.

As far as marketing this installment of Star Trek to the masses the success of Cloverfield is a good thing. Paramount needs the masses, JJ Abrams has been doing commercial work for the better part of this decade that appeals to the masses. They(paramount) want to move Trek out of the geeky, nerdy, and narrow niche that for better or worse Trek has fallen into.

I can see/hear the promos going something like this over a black screen/text intro.

From the man who brought you Alias, encouraged you to get LOST and brought you Cloverfield comes his vision on a voyage never before told...*que ST music*...STAR TREK....Christmas 2008

The media needs to buy into this as cool just as they were convinced that Battlestar Galactica was no longer niche.
Here's to hoping J.J. gets it done.

The success of Cloverfield can legitimize Abrams as a feature film director. It was very well done in general, aside from the Cinema Verite thing that I despise.

Should be noted Abrams did only produce Cloverfield...
Well I know there is a bit of crossover interest in Star Trek do to Abrams involvement.

Yeah, produced not directed.
Its his intimate involvement in the project though that could be legitimatly used in promotion though.

I wonder how many Trekkers went more interested in the teaser than the movie and then felt better about Trek 11.

I'm not saying Cloverfield doesn't add a lot to his resume, but he was involved in a little picture called "Mission Impossible III".

His IMDB page is actually quite impressive, and I don't really mean from a content POV. It really looks like he tries to get his hands into every aspect of production he can: writing, directing, producing, music, etc. Very hands on and interested in the process in its entirety; I like that.

It proves the point that I made in my my post about how Rolling Stone and other 'with it' publications now want to, or will start covering The Franchise because it has hot actors and actress in it. This is also brought up by John Kenneth Muir in his commentary on Battlestar Galactica-Making Lemonade: Or I Feel the Need, the Need for Speed...on the new Battlestar Galactica. People should just like Star Trek in all its incarnations, and not diss the rest of the franchise just because it wasn't like TOS. And they should be liking Star Trek for its basic pilosophy, not just because the guy that plays Madea is going to be in it.

But that's not how *entertainment* works. This idealized desire that people should just like Trek because it "teaches something nice" is secondary to it being good entertainment.

The success of Cloverfield is certainly a help. Having your last movie be a winner is bound to be more of a help for your next film than had it been a failure or, perhaps worse, mediocre.

I know Abrams only produced Cloverfield, but certainly positive buzz for his name can only be a good thing for Star Trek.

It can't hurt that's for sure. I had decided to check it out before I knew a trailer for Trek XI would be attached, the first Cloverfield one had me. The one thing that will hurt is it is Star Trek and people who don't like the franchise will still avoid this movie. Be nice to see this bring in $70 million+ the first weekend.

"People should just like Star Trek in all its incarnations, and not diss the rest of the franchise just because it wasn't like TOS."

I like TOS, TAS, DS9, SCE, Vanguard, IKS Gorkon, FASA Star Trek, and ADB's Prime Directive.

I am still a Moron tm?

We must make Star Trek Die With Us! tm.

No remembers William Shakes-speare. No one remembers that Edward de Vere wrote the works under an alias.

STAR TREK MUST DIE!!!! tm.

Hint- It's not 1966, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79.

Its 2008.

The Five Stages of Grief:

1. Shock and denial
2. Volatile Reactions
3. Disorganization and despair
4. Reorganization

Star Trek XI is the way Roddenberry & CO. wanted to make TOS. ADB has already done it.

Imagine if the TOS, TAS, Phase II tv series, DS9, SCE, Vanguard, IKS Gorkon, and FASA Star Trek had been made this way.

Huh?

Where did you get that idea?

And Roddenberry is on record as not liking what any of the RPGs were doing to ST - changing the show's premise in order to make the games work better.

GR had FASA's license revoked when he disagreed with some of their speculations in the "Star Trek IV Sourcebook update", the "TNG Season One Update" and the "TNG Officers's Manual".

Forgot about MI:3. The Marketing people have all kinds of stuff to play with when pushing this film.
