Just got done watching Close Encounters with the family..great movie that holds up just great...Kudos with all involved in the making this TRUE scifi classic...

But, while watching it, I noticed many music elements very similar to ET (yeah I know Williams did both) but perhaps ET's similar music was not by accident...did ET and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS take place in the same universe???

Anyway, great movie..we're going to watch E.T. next week...these movies show how good Spielberg was in his prime....

I always thought E.T. and Poltergeist not only took place in the same uiniverse, but in the same friggin town, and AT THE SAME TIME!

Actually they sorta all are related. Spielberg was hounded by the studio for a sequel to Close Encounters he came up with the idea of a family terrorized by alien scientists who were experimenting on their farm animals. One of the aliens was to have been kind and befriended the family's son I believe. It was going more into the horror genre and he was going to have Tobe Hooper direct it.

He even had some of the alien props created, but decided to take some aspects (mainly the kind alien) and then turn that into ET and not go in that direction...

He then eventually morphed the idea of aliens terrorizing a family into ghosts terrorizing a family and thus you get Poltergeist.

When asked later on about a sequel to Encounters, Der Spielberg rather flippantly responded with "I already did, it's called 'E.T."

I voted yes based on spaceship design and general alien design. Since ET was a biomanipulator of the first order, he could have been one of the delicate aliens from CLOSE with a re-engineered body designed to deal better with Earth's heavier gravity. Just as we change clothes to deal with varying weather, they might change their bodies for different planetary conditions. The ships were also very similar.
