It never bothered the clocks. Even the seemingly retro design of them is akin to having a nice old style clock in the dashboard of a brand new Bentley
I knew someone would come up with a Trek smoker before too long. Her name was Martia (I think. That's close, anyhoo). Nice pun, by the way.
^ Our Starfleet officers seldom did, but there are always going to be exceptions, such as in holodeck episodes and the like (where I guess the implication is that it's all just harmless atmosphere to help the crew get into character, certainly not "real" smoking). Which does beg the question: if the holodeck safety's get turned off and then they smoke a holo-pipe, can they get lung cancer?
Depends on whether the substance being smoked is holographic or replicated I assume. I'd assume generally toxic materials are handled via holography...then again, we've seen the holodeck give real guns to holograms... ...which really doesn't make sense. Maybe there's multiple levels of safeties, for instance one level to prevent injuries such as falling off a cliff, another level that can force replication of toxins and other dangerous materials.
Good point. I suppose it comes down to: is holodeck food "real" replicated food, or is it merely a holographic simulacrum of such? And therefore: do holodeck cigars contain "real" replicated tobacco, or are they too simply empty props for the characters to interact with, which for the purposes of reality still 'act' like real cigarettes and the like? I can't immediately recall off the top of my head if any of the holodeck episodes actually show any of our regular characters smoking, but I could easily imagine things like the Dixon Hill/Sherlock Holmes/Wild West holodeck programs having smoking in them. For the sake of 'realism'.
I did have a feeling "A Fistful of Datas" had something like that in it, but I didn't remember it completely and wasn't confident enough to stake a post on it.
The digital displays in that movie annoyed the hell out of me at the time. Just one more instance of Meyer pointlessly aping "The Hunt For Red October."
Makes sense. Smoking apparently isn't banned aboard Starfleet ships in the 24th century any more... http://tng.trekcore.com/hd/albums/1x07/lonelyamongus_hd_247.jpg Timo Saloniemi
When your bridge is one big wraparound touch screen you should be able to summon digital clocks and leave them wherever you want. Thus, having special clocks above the consoles like we see in VI seems very silly.
Perhaps, but is it not easier just to be able to look at a clock rather than call one up on a screen? And what about the Captain does he have instant acces to a clock? Would it have been better if they had just gone with one directly above the viewscreen?
