Clamshell original series 12

James Howard

Ensign
Newbie
I have just ordered on eBay a new Original Series 1 clamshell which is new for £25. Looking forward to playing it soon and although I have paid top dollar it will give me many hours of pleasure.

I was thinking the other day about physical media for things like music and TV shows/movies. How many people buy this stuff anymore? I know vinyl/cassette tapes have increased in sales, but I'm sure that's relative compared to two decades ago, so you'd still see a deficit.

For movies and TV shows that I'm more of a fan of and not just a casual viewer, I demand top-notch quality. So I prefer to have them on blu-ray disc, or UHD 4K disc if available (I consider DVD to be obsolete). The picture and sound quality are higher than streaming media, as these physical formats don't have the level of compression necessary for streaming. Plus you don't get connectivity issues like buffering, or not even being able to watch the show at all if there's an internet service outage, and in many cases the risk that the streaming service could lose the licensing deal for the show in question.

Cinephile labels such as Arrow and Criterion continue to put out great blu-ray and 4K disc releases. So there is certainly demand.

Another appealing aspect is attractive packaging such as steelbook sets or other decorative cases that you can display proudly with your pop culture goods.

I've actually been buying a lot of classic DVDs lately, mostly series like Voyager and Buffy where it's likely the best quality version I'll find, but other things too. Second hand DVD prices are too low for me to resist.

I'll always prefer physical media to streaming because I like to own things, they look good on a shelf, my internet's terrible, and I'd rather not have streaming-level compression. Though there is always the risk that my 20 year old discs will eventually crack and fall apart. I just lost Minority Report the other day!
