I'm watching The Shape of Things to Come on Netflix right now, and I got to the scene where Claire's house gets blasted by Keamy's rocket launcher.

She shouldn't have survived it, but wakes up when Sawyer finds her.

At the time the episode aired, there was some speculation that Claire had maybe died there - because of both the unreality of the situation and moreso because Miles seems to be hinting at something like that with his behavior and dialogue around Claire... the speculation was that Claire was maybe some kind of ghost a la Christian.

At the time I thought it might be true, but the way Claire was acting, interacting with everyone, was not consistent with the "ghost-like" nature of Christian and the other ghostie-type figures.

In the most recent episode, it was implied that maybe the spring-water didn't raise Sayid from the dead. He rose two minutes later, on his own, and it had nothing to do with the water - which probably lost its effect and went dark when Jacob died. The idea being, it was MiB who directly somehow raised Sayid with the infection.

I believe, from this, we can infer that the Shape of Things to Come rocket launcher attack is when Claire originally died, and when she 'wakes up' with Sawyer, that was her rebirth AND moment of "infection". It's followed by her essentially doing what Christian (MiB) says.

It's all very consistent with what happened to Sayid - Sayid's death, his rebirth moments later, followed by infection and susceptibility to suggestion by the MiB.

I was one of those who always thought that Claire died in the explosion so I definitely agree with your assessment of Sayid's story this season and the implications it has on Claire's story.

The only thing I'll say is that Claire seems somehow different than Sayid who now appears to have given himself over to his true nature while Claire - a bit cuckoo - seems a little less "evil", just confused.

Before she was "raised" by the infection, her body clearly had enough time to lie around long enough to have an animal build a nest on her melon.

if claire had been "dead" from that explosion for a bit longer, i could buy it, but sawyer swooped in pretty fast. If death/infection can happen that fast, it could've happened to any person on the island dozens of times over. (Charlie hanging from a tree, Kate drowned in the waterfall lake, numerous stab wounds and gunshots)

And there's also the "super-healing" qualities of the island to consider. Claire miraculously survived the explosion the same way she miraculously survived the plane crash.

Yeah, don't forget Sayid was dead for several hours. I mean, it's possible, but it's not exactly the same.

But the "infection" is likely not a natural (on the island anyway) or random occurrence that can happen to anyone who dies at any time after that happens. It is probably something done deliberately by Esau if and when he has a reason to do so. Those other examples just mean he wasn't interested in infecting those people at that time.
