I'm actually referring to the a New York Congressional District (the 23rd iirc) that the Republicans had held for over 100 years. Between infighting and a poor candidate choice they lost the seat the Republics - in very much the same way that the Democrats blew this election with a poor candidate.
When the GOP lost the NY seat they glossed over it, now they gloat over Massachusett while the Dems admit yeah we cocked up and get on with things.
Like all circle jerks there will be a moment of intense pleasure then you come to realisation that nothing's really changed and there's a mess to clean up.
Oh well you know reality, sometimes it's just not good friends with people....

Interesting. A Google search appears to indicate that both sides are right. It is 234,812 words, but because it's formatted as a bill rather than, say, a novel, the words are spread out onto about 2,000 pages. There are a lot of headings, outlines, lists, and such that create a lot more white space (good methods for increasing page count, like on the paper I need to get back to working on). I wonder if there are any "THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK" pages. Also, I wonder if the word count includes handwritten amendments, sticky notes, and the like.
Ah; thanks for explaining. I agree that this was not the first, and will not be the last, supposedly "safe" election lost because of pride and carelessness.

Apparently Jim Webb got the people's message....pretty smart on his part actually.
Sen. Jim Webb puts out a statement that puts the notion of a quick Senate vote out of reach and pretty much makes a certification fight moot:
"In many ways the campaign in Massachusetts became a referendum not only on health care reform but also on the openness and integrity of our government process. It is vital that we restore the respect of the American people in our system of government and in our leaders. To that end, I believe it would only be fair and prudent that we suspend further votes on health care legislation until Senator-elect Brown is seated."

It's always unfortunate when a Republican wins an election, of course, but this was not unexpected. The combination of a bad campaign and having Joe Kennedy on the ballot made it almost inevitable. They just need a better candidate to take it back in the next election.

Well there should be a LOT less democratic senators remaining by then. I think Brown will be an acceptable loss. For now though, he fits the bill (so to speak) quite nicely.
This November is going to be more like 1982 than it is 1994.

If the Progressives had let the Republicans come to the table or let their HR3400 out of committee (Pelosi you naughty thing) we might have a viable alternative to the proposed health care. But no. They stirred up the bees nest.

Meh, Joe Kennedy only got ~1% of the vote. That didn't make a difference.
