Chronicle - worst movie of the year award

I went to see Chronicle over the weekend and for the first time in many years, I walked out of the movie. Has anyone else seen this abortion of a movie?

Did anyone find anything redeeming in this film?

Synopsis: Teenagers who find magic green crystals in a cave get superpowers. But the worst part of this film is that they try to make it compelling by adding the element of having one of the teenagers filming the experience. :scream:

Ugh. Not only can I not get my $22 back - but also the 45 minutes of my life before I walked out.
 
I've heard only positive reviews of it until now, and it's at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. I'm actually planning to go see it this afternoon.

You spent $22 on a movie? I know prices are high these days, but I've never known them to be that high. Did you treat someone else to a ticket, or buy a lot of food?
 
It was a pretty good riff on the Akira story with a great fight scene at the end. I enjoyed it.

My partner and I did. I'm not trying to discourage you from seeing a movie that you might want to see - it's just for me personally it was so bad I walked out.

It's possible that it got better in the end but the genre of a character in the film, trying to 'film his life,' isn't one that's appealling to me.
 
I am not a huge fan of that 1st Person style of film-making. I did enjoy "Cloverfield," which managed to pull it off pretty well. I have no interest in see "Chronicle" in the theater, but I might check it out at some point.

If you don't like that genre why did you go and see it :confused:

I really liked it, I thought the characters were realistic and I liked how none of them were really trying to be heroes or villains.

I thought it worked in the film Super 8 only because the kids were filming a Zombie flick and their attempts to make it interwoven into the plot worked for me.

Just not in Chronicle
 
It was filmed in that style to cover up the relatively low budget. The director was offered the job after he made the Stabbing at Leia's video.

For me, the camera wasn't so egregious because the kid controls it with telekinesis for the most part. It also ties in well with his character because
at the start of the film he feels rejected by the other kids his age and his abusive dad, so he uses the camera as a physical and metaphorical barrier between him and society.

The final fight sequence is very emotionally charged and technically well made. It's my favourite film of the year so far, and one of my favourite 'superhero' films full stop. I'm sorry you don't agree, but proclaiming it to be the worst movie of the year just because you didn't like the filming style is, in my opinion, ludicrous.
 
I never once got the impression from the previews that this was going to be anything like a typical superhero movie.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to express my opinion as fact. I guess teenager flicks have lost their appeal. Twilight was OK but this one just didn't work for me.

First. I spent 8 dollars and didn't buy snacks. Learn to economize.

Second, the point of the movie is that the real cliche is the notion of teenagers gaining superpowers and deciding to be superheroes, which didn't happen at all here. These teens gained superpowers and were just as dumb and selfish with them as any teenager would be. In that light it's a great movie. I have no idea what you think it has to "redeem".

I'm sorry, what? Twilight was a story about a girl so vapid, the only way she can measure her self worth is by how much her equally vacuous boyfriend loves her, and he makes it clear that he only truly loves her for her 'virginity'. Twilight doesn't have characters, it has posterboards for Mormon values.

Chronicle is a story about a bullied and abused boy segregating himself from the society around him while simultaneously trying to find his place in the world, while a greater overall story about power and the way it corrupts peoples' negative traits plays out. I know which one I'd prefer to watch.

I got the bullied teenager gets super powers point. For me it just played badly in this film.

How was it supposed to play?? My only complaint was that the bullied kid didn't lose it sooner.
 
I liked this one quite a bit. It had some interesting ideas, solid acting, and it sidestepped some of the problems I usually have with these 'found-footage' flicks.
