...
Uh ... hello.
Somebody asked me if I was a fan of Doctor Who and when i said 'yes' they dragged me over and put me down in front of this keyboard.
What's going on?
"Fookin' 'ell Rose love, I'm so dark and mysterious after my war with some bin-octopuses that my whippets hardly recognise me. Gizza gobble, there's a bag of chips in it for yer..."
Do you, Mr Psion, longtime friend, recognise that scene?
GAAAH!
Get that guy away from me! I'll talk. I'll talk!
Sure, sure, anything you say. I do recognise the episode, and while I think you're trying too hard with that raging parody of it, you are somewhat spot-on and your excessive efforts are matched by the feigned obtuse-y-ness of your rivals.
But parody
does draw attention to the episode's flaws that really do stand out. That bit with Plastic Ricky and Rose in the car, for example. Would any one of us really have missed the fact that Nicky didn't look or act right? Hell, we wouldn't even have to
know Micky to see that there's something queer going on there. That scene makes Rose look as obtuse as some folks around here like to pretend they are.
Thick! Isn't that the word the Doctor liked to use?
And then there was that bit with the burping bin. I suppose that was supposed to be funny. But ... like Bones' first post, it tried too hard. Oh, sure, I've made Tupperware burp now and then, but that's obviously not what RTD was trying to do. He wanted to make the kids laugh. I doubt he did, and anyone over twelve probably rolled their eyes.
But it's the first sentence that made me pan your mini-review, Bones. Not only don't I get the "supped his bitter at Rovers Return" reference (I suppose it's got to be said with an accent we Americans can't conjure up in an instant), but it's a damned run-on sentence! And what's with claiming the Doctor had a fag in his mouth?! I don't remember him smoking! Yeah, yeah. I get it, you're giving him a dockworker image ... caricaturizing him. But am I trying too hard by saying you're trying too hard again?
And besides, Rose is clearly of reproductive age. It isn't creepy for an older man to want to have a go at a pretty girl who's 19, is it?
Is it?
Alright, forget I asked. Overall, when the episode was done, I remember not liking it. In fact, I thought it was so bad that I was embarrassed for having shown it to my wife. Mind you, I'd have been even more embarrassed if I'd shown her "Ghost Light".
