Ghost Bones

Captain
Captain
So the Doctor comes back and though last we saw of him he was an Edwardian gentleman figure, now he turns up with a rolled up newspaper and a fag in his mouth having just supped his bitter down the Rovers Return, trying to get in the knickers of a girl a small fraction of his age. He may as well have been played by Kevin Webster. And that Rose is no prize either. Nattering on to (taking the) Mickey about getting A levels, oblivious to the fact he's all plastic and weird. I mean what is this, Chucklevision? And how did that bin burp? Even if it is a plastic creature, it's not going to have a digestive system that would allow for that. It is, if you'll forgive the criticism, a little bit silly. So bimbo and Ferengi-eared Eccles run down the street to the Batman theme and chuck a bottle in a lava pool that creates an instant genocide and then Rose leaves with The Creep because he's white and her now-dumped boyf was black.

I prefered Ghost Light, if I'm honest.

Definitely is. If you describe those events to any fan of Doctor Who (2005-), they'll know what you mean without hesitation. And laugh at the funny jokes you would have just told.

No, they wouldn't because what you described never actually happened except from your obviously warped point of view.

Uh ... hello.

Somebody asked me if I was a fan of Doctor Who and when i said 'yes' they dragged me over and put me down in front of this keyboard.

What's going on?

"Fookin' 'ell Rose love, I'm so dark and mysterious after my war with some bin-octopuses that my whippets hardly recognise me. Gizza gobble, there's a bag of chips in it for yer..."

Do you, Mr Psion, longtime friend, recognise that scene?

No one does because it didn't happen.

"Flamin' 'eck Sal, I'm the new Docker Ooo!"

Is it just me who remembers this? See, he used to be a different bloke when the years began with a 19. Kind of like this:

And he didn't shag about then neither.

He used to be an old dude with questionable ethics, a lovable hobo, a crazy dude with a tattoo, an even crazier dude with weird clothes, a less crazy guy wearing a celery stick, a really crazy guy with loud clothes and a funny guy with a side-kick. One thing he never was was a boring guy from the 19th century. ;)
And it's a given that he had sex at one point, otherwise there would have been no Susan. I'm also convinced that both Three and Four did have quite a sex life. :p

Well we know old lispy Pertwee was nobbing Manning on the side. He has a right old cry when she left, genuinely and not just in that maggot rubbish. Rumour has it Trought died on the job at a convention. His poor wife :(

I do object to the notion that pic was of a boring guy. For all you know, that's my dad.

GAAAH!

Get that guy away from me! I'll talk. I'll talk!

Sure, sure, anything you say. I do recognise the episode, and while I think you're trying too hard with that raging parody of it, you are somewhat spot-on and your excessive efforts are matched by the feigned obtuse-y-ness of your rivals.

But parody does draw attention to the episode's flaws that really do stand out. That bit with Plastic Ricky and Rose in the car, for example. Would any one of us really have missed the fact that Nicky didn't look or act right? Hell, we wouldn't even have to know Micky to see that there's something queer going on there. That scene makes Rose look as obtuse as some folks around here like to pretend they are. Thick! Isn't that the word the Doctor liked to use?

And then there was that bit with the burping bin. I suppose that was supposed to be funny. But ... like Bones' first post, it tried too hard. Oh, sure, I've made Tupperware burp now and then, but that's obviously not what RTD was trying to do. He wanted to make the kids laugh. I doubt he did, and anyone over twelve probably rolled their eyes.

But it's the first sentence that made me pan your mini-review, Bones. Not only don't I get the "supped his bitter at Rovers Return" reference (I suppose it's got to be said with an accent we Americans can't conjure up in an instant), but it's a damned run-on sentence! And what's with claiming the Doctor had a fag in his mouth?! I don't remember him smoking! Yeah, yeah. I get it, you're giving him a dockworker image ... caricaturizing him. But am I trying too hard by saying you're trying too hard again?

And besides, Rose is clearly of reproductive age. It isn't creepy for an older man to want to have a go at a pretty girl who's 19, is it?

Is it?

Alright, forget I asked. Overall, when the episode was done, I remember not liking it. In fact, I thought it was so bad that I was embarrassed for having shown it to my wife. Mind you, I'd have been even more embarrassed if I'd shown her "Ghost Light".
