Christopher Eccleston finally speaks about why he left Doctor Who

Yeah. You do have to wonder when he says 'culture' if what he might actually mean is fandom.
I doubt that. He's said himself as clearly as he can without offending anyone that he didn't like the show and working on the show. Besides, fandom in 2005 was quite different from fandom now. And pretty much everyone involved with the show is happy enough to completely ignore any element of fandom who expresses any criticism. Or, in the case of RTD, happy enough the insult them.

I was sure this was going to be a joke thread...

Here, let me help - from The Daily Mash:

Surly actor Christopher Eccleston has claimed he was the star of Doctor Who.

Eccleston insists he played the Doctor from March to October 2005 but then stopped because he did not want to become typecast as the sort of actor that isn't in one grim northern drama after another.

But Stephen Malley, a grade five Whovianist from Peterborough, said: "Well he certainly hasn't become typecast because I've no idea who he is.

"Occasionally you do get actors, desperate for publicity, suddenly popping up and claiming they were Doctor Who at some point. The last time it was John Sessions."

Eccleston, who is about to squeeze all the joy out of John Lennon in a new BBC drama, told the Radio Times that he 'did not enjoy the environment and the culture' of the show, adding: "I thought if I stay in this job, I'm going to have to blind myself to certain things that I thought were wrong."

But Professor Henry Brubaker of the Institute for Studies said: "By 'wrong' he probably meant working past six o'clock at night in contravention of EU working directives, or doing episodes that were not about how Thatcherism destroyed Bolton.

"Unless of course he is claiming that Doctor Who is actually a front for heroin smuggling and under-age goat sex."

Eccleston has carved out a sort of career for himself after appearing in the landmark 37-part BBC drama London is Fucking Shit, before going on to star in a series of miserable Jimmy McGovern classics including Bastards and Why Won't it Stop Raining?.

The pair later teamed up for a dismally unsuccessful reworking of the children's adventure series Monkey where Eccleston played a disillusioned trade union activist who could magically transform himself into a library for working class children.

I think you really need to go watch The Greatest Show in the Galaxy to see what the producers during the McCoy era thought of fandom...

What difference does that make? Besides, fandom then and fandom now are quite different. What with the internet and all.

Anyway, my main point is that there weren't any anti-newWhoers or RTD-hating back in 2005. And I doubt he left because he suddenly realised DW has fans who dress up and knit their own Daleks. It's clear as day to me that the reason he left is because he didn't enjoy working on the show and thought it was shite.

While I can't be certain, I'd say it's a relatively safe assumption that if Christopher Eccleston was a bigoted homophobe he'd have flat out refused to let John Barrowman kiss him on screen, for millions to see.

Captain Jack kissed the Doctor. Barrowman kissed Eccleston.

So let's drop the big gay debate and just accept the fact that he disagreed with some of the things behind the scenes and left the show.

Now Stuart, if you look at the soil around any large U.S. city with a big
underground homosexual population - Des Moines, Iowa, perfect example.
Look at the soil around Des Moines, Stuart. You can't build on it, you
can't grow anything in it. The government says it's due to poor farming.
But I know what's really going on, Stuart. I know it's the queers.
They're in it with the aliens. They're building landing strips for gay
Martians. I swear to God.

Yep. I bet he quit because of gay Martians.

This thread is chock full of people trying to prove their moral and intellectual superiority to the world. To accomplish this, they are throwing labels like "bigot" and "prejudice" around, as if those words alone will answer every question and justify their every word. Just remember, those that yell the loudest are the ones with the most to prove.

Meanwhile, Chris said exactly why he left. If you decide to apply your personal opinions and projections on those reasons, that's between you and your therapist. :techman:

Agreed. This thread did get quite absurd quite fast.

My impression from the quotes is that one or two of the people on set were just incredibly bothersome to Eccleston, but he will not name them out of professional courtesy.

It's definitely a shame that Eccleston doesn't talk more about the show. He was such a great Doctor but you get the impression he usually either refuses to talk about it (on the rare occassions that he gives interviews), or interviewers are just too damn scared to ask. lol

But I guess that's just the risk you take when you hire a "serious" actor to be the Doctor.

Hm. Breaking news: Christopher Eccleston left Doctor Who because something (we don't know what) happened there that he felt was not good.

In other news today, scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory announced that the sky is blue. In weather, meteorologists have determined that rain is wet...

Oh come now, this is the Trek Board, where we discuss things like Beltran or Wang talk about how they hated their shows, how Berman got into arguments with Brooks and Blalock, and other backstage bits of gossip and drama, all for good or for ill. Here, Eccleston gives us the exact reasons why he left, and all without really bashing the entire franchise either.

He didn't give exact reasons. Clearly, since we've had 6 pages of speculation about what he was alluding to.
