Christmas special title revealed - "Last Christmas"

I've been thinking about the title and wondering about the word "last." Is it last as in final, or is it last as in previous? Or both?

Because the previous Christmas could potentially be a reference to the Doctor's regeneration on Trenzalore or something to do with the Time Lords return.

I think the title has clearly been chosen for 2 reasons. Firstly, because of the obvious name recognition of the Wham song, which will get noticed by the general viewing public. And secondly, in terms of the keener fans, it will lead to speculation as to whether it's about Clara's final christmas in the show/TARDIS. But all of that could be misdirection about what the actual story is about, of course.

The Christmas theme really seemed shoehorned into Time of the Doctor. However, if that had been a better story, I'd probably not have noticed!

Mr Awe

Precisely. Smith's finale was already overloaded with three series' worth of plot strands and the Christmas element just got in the way more than anything else.

I for one wanted the 2014 Christmas Special to include something about the WW1 truce.

I can exclusively reveal that it's called Last Christmas because Capaldi will regenerate into Andrew Ridgley at the end...

Presumably his Christmas debut - but even that doesn't make sense, given that we saw him in the closing minutes of the last Christmas Special.

Getting back to speculation on what the title could mean, I had a thought? What if this is Moffat's last Christmas special? Yes, I know, it's a confirmed fact he's sticking around for season 9, but what if he's planning the season 9 finale to be his final episode, and next year's Christmas special will be written by the next showrunner?

What got me thinking about this is that Last Christmas will be Moffat's fifth Christmas Special, and RTD only did five Christmas specials.

Thoughts?

With BBC liking to keep info close to their breast, the timing to do that seems really difficult. If that were to be the case, I would expect there to be no Christmas Special next year

I think it would be a little odd if a new showrunner's first episode was a Christmas special, I guess the other option would be for an experienced hand ala Gatiss, Roberts or whoever to do it? (always assuming an experienced hand ala Gatiss isn't the next showrunner... ;)

Actually I think I'd quite like a spooky Gatiss Christmas special!

On the contrary, I think that would serve the program and the BBC's interests well.

It's unlikely, for financial reasons, that we'll have another skip year for a producer changeover. But starting a new producer on the Christmas special would be a way of effectively doing what was done with the RTD-Moffat changeover, which was to give the incoming producer time to get up to speed. While Moffat handles the main year's series, the new producer can get up to speed over a period of months by handling the Christmas special and then take that momentum into the subsequent series.

Got a screencap of the latest trailer with the best look at the aliens so far. Looks like a new alien to me.
