Christmas special title revealed - "Last Christmas"

The Feast of Steven was the only Christmas special of the classic era simply because it was the only episode to actually fall of Christmas day. By the time Xmas rolled around on a Saturday again (1971) the show was starting in January.

The next Saturday Xmas Who had taken a break (Season 14) and split the season up into two halves. The rest of the classic era just didn't fall on Xmas day.

As someone pointed out, comedies do Xmas specials but not necessarily dramas, so Who was never targeted as needing a special to be made.

Most of the soaps do a Christmas special, Call the Midwife does a Christmas special, this year even Sherlock will be doing a Christmas special.

I really don't see what the problem is.

(Some) Yanks who can't understand that different countries do things differently?

Then again given that just about every retailer in the UK and Ireland is having a Black Friday sale despite the fact that we don't bloody have Thanksgiving, it won't be long before we're all one indistinguishable mass of Gangers...

On top of that, they all use the relatively small island of England for their staging area. But yeah, five Christmas themed adventures is "ridiculous".

Where is this small island called England, I thought they usually tried to invade Great Britain.

Just because something is done, that doesn't require everyone to automatically approve of it. That would be mindless conformity, and Doctor Who has never been about celebrating conformity. I've already explained why annual Christmas specials make more sense in a series that takes place on present-day Earth than in one that travels all over time and space.

I don't have a problem with the Who Christmas specials. I feel they may be becoming a little less special, the regularity and familiarity breeding contempt and all that. I don't think it would be a terrible idea if the Christmas special concept were rested for a year. That's all.

Ratings is king, regardless of what Auntie will claim and as long as Who does well on Christmas Day and it beats the competition, the Christmas specials will remain.

Sweet shit, seriously? I thought it was bad enough we do Black Friday in Canada, despite our Thanksgiving being in October.

But on topic, I certainly have no problem with Doctor Who Christmas specials. It's practically a Christmas tradition now. And given how much the schedule has been mixed around over the past few years, isn't it nice to have one day of the year you know will always have new Doctor Who?

It started a bit last year but today we're having the full experience, complete with police being called in to break up people fighting over Frozen dolls and other assorted crap.

Yeah that's kind of like in Canada, only we started two years ago, and then it was only American-owned retail chains. Then last year everyone got in on it. I don't remember any riots breaking out (at least not where I live), but it's madness all the same, with people lining up outside malls as early as 5 am, and by noon the malls are practically inaccessible as all the roads leading to them are choked with traffic. Pathetic, really.

I totally get that. I accept that the Christmas specials aren't going anywhere, short of the BBC pulling the plug on Doctor Who entirely, for years to come.

Oh I thought you would get that. It's just with that stance from the BBC, any and all discussion concerning the Christmas specials and certain people complaining about it is all academic and just like pissing into the wind.

So the old TOS line about it being Thangsgiving on Eath could become the truth if it becomes an alternate name for the global Black Friday situation in the 23rd century.

If it's anything like Black Friday here, that should be gangsters.

Sounds the same as here.

You freeze your dolls over there? :cardie: ;)

Reminds me of a comment I always make about having Black Friday in Canada. "Why don't we just start celebrating the American Thanksgiving? While keeping our own, of course."

You can have it provided you take all the "day after" idiots too.

LOL, that was my first instinct, until I thought about it a bit :alienblush:

Yes, and then they are gonna build a snowman and go out and play!

As far as I'm concerned, there is no problem! :) I just enjoy the extra Who!

The only slight niggle I have is that the Christmas theme really seemed shoehorned into Time of the Doctor. However, if that had been a better story, I'd probably not have noticed!
