Christmas Special News (Spoilers)

Thankfully the costume doesn't look to bad; the mask's a little much maybe.

Now the question is did they actually go over to Canada to shoot some of this as was rumoured a while back or was it all faked in Cardiff?

According to Gallifrey Base, the stuff about filming in Vancouver was a misunderstanding. Peter Capaldi had to make a trip to Vancouver for undisclosed reasons, and somehow this got conflated to "Doctor Who filming in Vancouver."

It's interesting that in recent years there has been a tendency towards brief trailers with minimal content (just a two second shot of the Doctor's eyes in the dark and the TARDIS console sparking), yet here they've put out a full trailer for an episode that is seemingly unfinished given the green screen and camera crews.

That is unless, of course, it's all a show-within-a-show and the Christmas special is about the Doctor helping someone to film a superhero movie. My hopes are not high.

An interesting (indeed rather concerning) thing to note is that the Christmas "special" is now more of a fixed convention than the series proper. Indeed, with this latest instalment thirteen out of the one hundred and thirty-two episodes of the revived series will have been Christmas specials. When you throw in the fact that they tend to be at least an hour long whereas most normal episodes are only forty-five minutes, it becomes apparent that more than 10% of "NuWho"'s runtime has been Christmas-themed. This strikes me as absurdly high for a science fiction series. Certainly I doubt that the corresponding figure would even be as high as 1% for the Classic Series or for any iteration of Star Trek.

Star Trek has had twelve references to Christmas. Actually only nine refer to the specific holiday, with an additional three references to Christmas trees. The most prominent Christmas ever got in the Trek franchise was Picard's Nexus fantasy in Generations.

Well its a BBC series and many BBC series (and other UK channels' series) have Christmas specials, and in fairness not all of the Who specials have been that Christmassy (The last one, the End of Time as a couple of examples)

Classic series did it a few times too, most notably "The Feast of Steven" and "K-9 and company"...sort of.

There's been a few episodes that have taken place during other holidays, such as European folk festivals (Daemons and Awakening-it's also interesting that Day of the Doctor seems to imply Gallifrey has something similar-Otherstide maybe ;) )
The TV movie also took place on New Years Eve/Day if that counts.

Huh, I'm surprised they released a 3-minute clip before any kind of trailer.

As for the the clip itself...eh.

This feels like a Moffet early season 9 episode. I'm not that excited. Considering they've been off the air for a year I expected something bigger.
