It was the 1980s incarnation of The Twilight Zone.Also adapted as an episode of Amazing Stories back in the 80s (or was it Twilight Zone?)
AS I guessed... very intriguing. It's almost impossible for me to discuss the story without involving my faith. I can promise you that the story did not in any way upset that faith, but it was just as you said: thought provoking.
