Chris Pine appreciation thread

You guys should probably check with your local newstands or where ever you were going to get GQ. I called a newstand near where I work and he said they had a whole stack of the new GQs. He couldn't tell me if they had the one with Chris Pine on the cover so I am going to go at lunch to check it out.

Also, watch this hilarious Access Hollywood interview with John Cho at the DVD Release Party. He talks about missing Chris and it's really cute. Hope I can save it when I get home tonight.

^ Thanks; I'll give that a look. :) I did manage to find the Bruce Greenwood interview again.

Bruce Greenwood Talks about the Next 'Star Trek'

The second "Star Trek" feature of the J.J. Abrams era -- the 12th big-screen edition of the "Star Trek" franchise overall -- is in the works, reveals Bruce Greenwood, who played the Enterprise's Captain Christopher Pike in the "Star Trek" flick that burned up the box office this year.

Greenwood says "I can hardly wait" about the prospect of getting back into Starfleet uniform. He says that he's been talking to Abrams about what would be the latest edition of the sci-fi saga and notes that, as yet, "there are no guarantees, J.J. -- one of the nicest guys on the planet -- has indicated there will be a place in the project for me."

Shooting of the new "Trek" is expected to start next summer, a period that thus far is open for Greenwood. This year has been one of almost non-stop work for the actor, who stars in CBS' Nov. 29 Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, "A Dog Named Christmas."

"Christmas," the tale of a developmentally challenged young man who convinces his family to participate in an "Adopt a Dog for Christmas" Program, shot in Canada this summer. Greenwood followed it with the big-screen Western "Meeks' Cutoff" with Michelle Williams, then the feature "Barney's Version" with Paul Giamatti. And now he's getting ready to start "Dinner for Schmucks" with Steve Carell and Paul Rudd -- based on the French movie about a group of wealthy cynics who humiliate and mock their dinner guests.

A program is in the works, in conjunction with the release of "A Dog Named Christmas," to create a nationally advertised program for animal shelters to foster adoption programs for pets during the upcoming Christmas season.

Greenwood thinks the program is a nifty idea. "If only half the people who take a foster dog decide to keep the pet, it's still a great idea. Even if the dog goes back to the shelter, it's had a fantastic break from the kennel."

As for himself, Greenwood says his on-the-go life would make it impossible for him to have a pet. "It just wouldn't be fair," he says. "I've worked everywhere from China to Australia, Canada, Montana and Oregon this past year." But he wouldn't mind adopting a pooch for the holidays when he and his wife will be home with family in Vancouver.

Only two hours to go til I am off work until after Thanksgiving. Wonder how many times I can watch the movie in that many days? And spend some time doing screen grabs. That will be really fun. The movie is now on my iphone and I watched some of it yesterday at lunch. Why oh why do we have to wait until 2012 to see the next one?

I watched that John Cho video, and he is hilarious! Thanks for the link! :) Wow, you've got a good vacation coming up, Pam. I have the movie on my iPhone, too; I don't mind waiting for stuff now. I just pull out the phone.

I must say, I enjoyed screen capping this scene!

Aw, that last one in particular is so cute.

I'd like to see Chris's reaction when someone tells him what John said. Hee hee. Maybe John has a man crush on Chris like Chris does on Karl Urban. Too funny.

Pam, thanks for finding that! I must have watched that back in May, but they're always worth another enjoyable look. :D

Tom, I just couldn't help myself. Did you see my question about your Enterprise? I was wondering if it came in a flat pack and people had to assemble it.

From the Chris google-alert mail bag, there is a review of Chris's movie, "Carriers," at a UK site, heyyouguys.co.uk, which they say is due out December 11 (in the UK?). The review could use a good copy editor, but it is interesting nonetheless.

Review: Carriers

Posted by Gary Phillips on November 21, 2009 · Comments

With all the hype surrounding the big release of Star Trek this week I was very interested in seeing Chris ‘Captain Kirk’ Pine’s next role in ‘Carriers’ and it was a strange film, fascinatingly apocalyptical but drowning in it’s own idea.

Looking into the history of the film it was interesting to see that it was written and directed by Alex and David Pastor and completed and screened way back in 2007 but Paramount put it on the shelf and it’s likely that the rise in fame of Chris Pine is the reason why it’s been finally given it’s release, and worryingly I entered the screening apprehensive that it was shelved due to being rubbish. But fortunately it wasn’t, it was an ok film.

The story is of a world devastated by an unknown disease and the survivors struggle to stay alive by trying to avoid it, our heroes of the film brothers Brian (Pine) and Danny (Lou Taylor Pucci) and two girls Bobby (Piper Perabo) the girlfriend of Brian and Kate (Emily Vancamp) travel together avoiding contact with anyone they come across where possible.

The brothers aim is to reach a beach that they use to visit as kids which is shown in old film footage of the brothers to give a sense of a goal as they try to survive, nothing is going to stop them and they will do anything to get there.

On route they pass an SUV where a father begs for petrol for him and his sick daughter but they flee seeing the disease is evident on the girl, they eventually come to a stop as their car breaks down and knowing they have petrol and the SUV doesn’t they venture back to the SUV and take it, sealing the father and daughter in the rear with plastic sheeting and duct tape as morals dictate you can’t leave a child behind to die. can you.

The film then follows the story of survival and huge moral dilemma’s as situations escalate more and more leaving our characters to have to choose survival or risk putting everyone in jeopardy and it’s the movies strong point asking the characters to make these decisions is harsh and asks you the viewer what would you do in there situation, it’s a brutal lesson of human behaviour.

What I liked about the film apart from the horrific ethical choices that are made are the people our characters meet, all trying to survive or find/believe in a cure and the ones that come to terms with what’s going on are the ones that make the decisions that are completely wrong in a normal world but are justified when in a world like this and where immense pain and suffering are the only alternative to a quick death, but not everyone can except these choices.

The film does seem to forget it’s own rules of how the disease transmits from person to person, at the start of the movie there are rules they follow, no contact with infected, clean everything that was touched by infected and avoid the breath of infected and they do this religiously but later on they seem to forget these rules with no consequence so you lose any fear of the disease which annoyed me.

But there is a great scene of a golf course hotel where they come across a band of guys who are suited in hazmat outfits and have stockpiled supplies and the paranoia and circumstances of this face off is splendid and shows self preservation of the human mind which is what these apocalypse films should be about.

The tense finale at the golf course is gripping and brutally character building that leads to later choices that affect the traveling companions.

I’m currently reading Stephen King’s “The Stand” and it follows the same basic idea of a disease that wipes out most of humanity so this story really struck me, I love these end of world movies where there are few survivors hanging onto the hope of salvation and there has been a few recently with Zombieland and The Road and it’s the Road this has more in common with. No explanation of why or how, it just is and that’s more terrifying than knowing some times.

Overall a reasonably good watch, the moral choices are fascinating but the plot seems to stumble along, it’s best to go in with no expectations and just enjoy the moral choices everyone has to make throughout. It’s a film obviously groping for the “Captain Kirks in it” crowd but it will definitely appeal to a larger audience. It has some nice scares and mentally challenging scenarios and well worth a trip to the cinema.

Overall 6.5 out of 10.

Carriers is out on 11th December.

That first one is a favorite; but I think I've only seen the action-figure one on video. He's so cute. :D Very nice; thanks!

Did you see this at APPS OF THE WEEK? GQ is initiating an iPhone app starting with the Chris Pine issue. I was wondering if you tried it out; if so, I'd be interested in what you think. They say:

GQ | Dec 09 | Men of the Year Issue

Price: $2.99
Writing from a female perspective, what could be better than having GQ’s men of the year just a few inches from your face on your iPhone? Well, actually, a print magazine probably is better. But that’s beside the point. This is GQ’s first whack at taking the magazine digital, and it’s actually quite a pleasurable experience. Flip through the five covers of the special issue (including President Obama, the guys from The Hangover, Chris Pine [Star Trek], Clint Eastwood, and Tom Brady) and browse through all of the featured articles in the print mag through the table of contents. Also check out the exclusive photo and video content only offered through the app.

Jeri, I had not seen that app and I am interested in checking it out. Thanks. Did not get the issue of GQ yesterday as I decided to wait until today to check out the newstands. I have my fingers crossed they still have the one with him on the cover.

Pam, I didn't get out to a store today; probably we will go tomorrow, and I'll see if they have any.

Here's the Kobayashi Maru scene; so many cute ones to choose from! :D It's a funny scene.

Kind of off-topic, but I just noticed something in this cap. I don't think they're even credited cast, but don't the
two guys in the background on the right look like the same person? The one in the background left could be
another copy/clone, but it's not as clear.

I think those three are the same guy. There was this single guy running around behind the scene:

Here's the unretouched cap; I usually think they're too dark. The two standing figures almost look flipped. Their hair is parted on the opposite side and their arms look mirror. They have some shadows in different places, though. Maybe the guy sitting was the real one.

I noticed first that the two guys on the right seemed to be smiling at Kirk's playing to the observation window, and then noticed that their smiles, and even more so, their chins seemed alike.

I did not see your question Jeri, yes they come unassembled in a box about the size of two DVD cases one in front of the other.

Clones.

As a die-hard Kirk/Shatner fan, I felt that Pine did a great job in the role.

And I do hope he continues to keep the little "Shatner-isms" in there when he continues to play the role in the future.
